Abstract:Abundance and biomass of heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNF) in southern Taiwan Strait (117°5’~119°9’E, 22°4’~24°3’N) were firstly investigated in August, 1997 and reported. Based on analysis of 103 samples collected from the waters, the abundance of HNF were in the range 391×103~1 846×103 cell*L-1, average 949×103 cell*L-1, with 96.2% of cell size composed of 2~22 μm in all HNF met in the samples. These abundance correlated to carbon contents was 3.64~16.96 μg*C*L-1, average 8.45 μg*C*L-1. The highest biomass of HNF was found in southern waters where cell amount was higher of 3~5 folds than other waters and near 1 fold than average biomass in whole investigated areas. The HNF occurred mainly between 0~30 m water layers in vertical distribution. In-situ continuous observation in two anchored stations of HNF indicated 24-hour rhythm in diurnal amount variation but the difference of peak time, with a delay of about 6 hours between the two stations.
