Abstract:Bacteria in the genus Wolbachia are endosymbionts found in the reproductive tissues of insects accross a wide taxonomic spectrum. They cause cytoplasmic incompatibility between strains and related species in their hosts, thus impart a reproductive advantage for them. We studied Wolbachia in the Small Brown Planthoppers and found that Wolbachia transmission rate in the cloutes bred in lab was nearly 100%, while it was a bit lower in fieldcollected ones. This is possibly one of the reasons why there remains a polymorphism of Wolbachia infection in the nature. We also found that Wolbachia had positive effect on host fecundity, which is of great significance for us to make clear the evolutionary biology of Wolbachia. Our experiment also showed that the Wolbachia strain under investigation caused high level of cytoplasmic incompatibility. These three major factors that affect population biology of Wolbachia will help us establish a system to drive other maternally inherited symbionts into wild population, thus the useful genes transformed into the symbionts can be spread among the host populations.
