"信"在严复"译事三难"中的真实地位--及其"非常规"反映的深刻原因

历来对严复提出的“信、达、雅”的翻译标准的讨论和批评不断。尤其对于“信”这一标准的非议更是颇多,这似乎是由于严复译作本身所产生的误导。本文拟从历史的角度,以严复本人的著说为根本,客观地去探寻“信”的真实地位,并摆脱传统翻译批评的束缚,合理地解释其深层次的原因。

The True Status of "Faithfulness" in Yan Fu's Translation Criterion "Faithfulness, Expressiveness, Elegance"--And the in-depth causes of its non-conventional manifestation in his translation practice

There have been hot discussions on the validity of the three-character translation criterion of "faithfulness, expressiveness, elegance "put forward by Yan Fu. In particular,the sub-standard"faithfulness"receives the most censure,which probably is caused by Yan Fu's own translation practice. Taking Yan Fu's works as evidence,this paper,from a historical perspective,tries to objectively explore the true status of faithfulness in the organic whole of this translation criterion and give a reasonable explanation of its in-depth causes of its non-conventional manifestation.
