The Rawlings＇“happy”marriage,taken from the standards of the male-dominated world,is maintained at the cost of the loss of freedom and independence on the part of the wife,and the intelligence that the Rawlings admire is actually a series of values set by the male-dominated world,while Susan＇s suicide is the result of the oppression and bondage of the male-dominated world.Lessing chooses a narrator who first narrates their“happy”marriage from an omniscient perspective and then shifts to the third-person internal perspective,to penetrate fully into the protagonist＇s inner world and to present the female experience.In this way,she successfully involves the reader in experiencing Susan＇s pains so that the reader may come to realize that Susan＇s suicide is a wrathful shout against the unfair social phenomena,a silent struggle against the oppression of the male-dominated world.
