Brief on Searle＇s Indirect Speech Act

Austin＇s theory of speech act is suggestive, but he died before he was able to develop it. The phenomenon of Indirect Speech Act theory was first observed by John Rogers Searle, Austin＇s student. This paper shall come to Searle＇s view on indirect speech act in terms of its definition, four assumptions, the apparatus and classification. In addition, the paper will further to discuss some doubts about Scarle＇s indirect speech act, point out some defects and give a more clear understanding of the theory of indirect speech act.
