| Abstract: | The square-pallet chain-pump was one of the main devices for the irrigation of fields in ancient China.The windmill was one of the major prime movers for operating chain--pumps by gearing.With an analysis of relevant historical materials and on-the-spot investigation into certain extant traditional machinery,this paper inquires into the structures and principles of square-pallet chain-pumps and two kinds of windmills.It ends with a discussion on the origin of windmills in China. |
