The Review of 1942 is an investigative novel.When the narrator "I" of the novel interriewed people and incidents,he laughed five times and his laughter was light and shallow.As these five laughs occured in different situations,they had different meanings.The narrator's laughs symbolize way of looking at existence and history in a different way.The laughter succeeds in separating the narrator and the reader from narrative object,thus enabling both the narrator and reader to objectively view history.In the meanwhile,it shows the readers' attitude to wards real life by implication.
