Abstract:The concept of power series for analyzing pile foundation which forms the basis of the "M" method defined in the bridge specification is extended and generalized in this paper for the analysis of any segmentally variable crosssection pile foundation. The context describes, through deduction with matrix calculation, the general formula expression of force-resisting stiffnesses for single segmentally variable cross-section pile. Three computer programs have been developed to calculate a pile foundation example respectively under the situation of constant and variable cross-section. By the comparison and analysis of the computation results, the extended idea is testified and some special characteristics about segmentally variable cross-section pile foundation are obtained as well.
