Abstract:In view of the fact that testing procedure is troublesome and material consumption is more in metallic materials measurement of fracture toughness,from the principle that the compliance will be increased when the crack extends in the loading procedure, a formula for calculating J integral was proposed. The compliance is calculated with the method of loading and unloading. The onset point of crack extension and the point of unstable crack extension can be determined from the curve of compliance load point displacement. J IC and K JIC values calculated by this method are in good agreement with those with normal method for three kinds of high strength and high fracture toughness steels.
