Summary After resection of 90% of liver tissue, no significant increase of thymidine-³H labelling or mitotic index of hepatocytes can be observed in rats. The minimum residual liver mass critical for inducibility of proliferation and, in consequence, essential for survival of rats is more than 10% and less than 18% of the total liver parenchyma.
