Reason and Myth-Research on the Cosmogony in Huainanzi

The cosmogony in Huainanzi is the most detailed and representative theory in the Han Dynasty,which influences the cosmologies thereafter.Research writings on the history of Chinese philosophy only focus on the cosmogony in Celestial Patterns,without a panorama of the whole work.The cosmogony in Huainanzi is a summary of the cosmogonies in the pre-Qin period.It actually contains two types of cosmogony schemata.The first schema in Celestial Patterns and Activating the Genuine can be called“rational”or“philosophical”,in which everything was originated from the movement of Yin and Yang.The second schema is hidden and mythical in Quintessential Spirit.By comparison with related content in earlier unearthed documents,the depiction of“there were two spirits,born in murkiness”should be derived from ancient mythology.
