A Study on the Switching of Discourse Roles from Myers-Scotton's Markedness Model

Myers-Scotton' s markedness model is a cognitively based pragmatic theory to account for implied messages or intentionalities in codeswitching. According to this model, in a marked choice of discourse roles, the producer conveys to the receiver additional messages, i. e. intentionalities, as the model calls it, to balance with the extra costs resulted from the choice. Through the conveying of these intentionalities, certain pragmatic effects are achieved. In this way, the switching of discourse roles turns into a pragmatic strategy to effect successful communication.
