护丧之制由来已久，朝廷通常为某些官贵指定护丧官员，以示特别的荣宠。护丧者的职级与逝者生前的身份地位是紧密相连的。北魏护丧制度承袭汉晋，凸显出拓跋鲜卑入主中原后身份等级关系的发展变化。

Research on the funeral-presiding system in the Northern Wei Dynasty

Funeral-presiding system has a very long history. The imperial court usually sent officials to preside the funerals of some officials and aristocrats to show special favour. The rank of the official presiding the funeral was closely related to that of the dead before his death. The funeral-presiding system in the Northern Wei Dynasty followed the tradition of the Han and Jin Dynasties and showed obviously the changes in identity and rank relations after Xianbei ruled Central Plains.
