Rubber Cultivation in Xishuangbana:Influences and Improving Approaches

Xishuangbanna in southwest China is a tropical and subtropical rgeion with extraordinary traditional cultures and attractive landscapes. As a key production source undergiong rapid growth,rubber cultivation contributes substantially to the improvement of local economic situation and replaces partially the traditional slash and burn agriculture in the uplands but results in biodiversity loss and environmental degradation and disturbs the peaceful life of the indigenous People,We discuss the traditional ecological knowledge (TEK)reserved in the daily Practices and the present types of rubber plantations and suggest the application of TEK,in particular,the indigenous landuse experiences to rubber cultivation in order to promote sustainability in local economic development and ecological well-beings.
