摘    要:A discrete optimum mathematical model to derive the “maximum capacity“ of people in a room or in a space used for public gatherings is developed. There are two outcomes in the model. One is focused on whether the person farthest from exits can escape from the room. The other concentrates On the evacuation time of all the people in the room. According to the results of the two outcomes, a more reasonable “maximum capacity“ can be worked out in a simple way.

Abstract:A discrete optimum mathematical model to derive the “maximum capacity” of people in a room or in a space used for public gatherings is developed. There are two outcomes in the model. One is focused on whether the person farthest from exits can escape from the room. The other concentrates on the evacuation time of all the people in the room. According to the results of the two outcomes, a more reasonable “maximum capacity” can be worked out in a simple way. Ziyan Wu is the professor of the Department of Civil Engineering, Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU), Xi’an, China. She is a fellow of PMRC, IPMA, and is the honorable members of several societies. Her areas of research interests include system optimization, decision making for management and mathematical modeling. She has worked for decades on the dynamic processes and feedback control systems and on decision problems with the recursive process. Now she is working on the concurrent design problems and theory that deal with the project management.
