Civilization与“文明”——以《时务报》为例分析“文明”一词的使用

中国源于古代的“明”一词在近代被赋予了新的涵义，是英语Civilization的译词。新义“明”根源于西洋，但直接来自东洋。19世纪末20世纪初“明”在中国时兴起来。《时务报》中所出现的“明”一词的涵义及使用情况，从一个侧面反映西学在近代中国的兴盛情形、日本化对中国知识分子的影响以及近代知识分子欲“变法图强”的强烈呼声。

"Civilization" in English and Chinese:An Analyse on the Usage of "Civilization" Based on the Chinese Progress

However,Civilization got new meanings in modern China, which was translated from the English term Civilization,as indicated that the ancient Chinese term became a modern concept . Civilization became popular in the late 19th century and beginning of 20th century. This study analyzes the meanings and usages of the term Civilization in the Chinese Progress (Shi Wu Bao) and sums them up to some data in table, from which we can see that Western Learning prospered in modern China, that Japanese culture had great impact on modern Chinese intellectuals and that modern Chinese intellectuals longed for reform very intensely .
