The Explanation of English Middle Construction by Using ICM

This paper will apply the Idealized Cognitive Model（ICM） in cognitive linguistics to explain the motivation behind the Middle Formation and to analyze the properties of Middle verbs. This paper holds the view that Middle Construction is a special grammatical type with its own syntactic characteristics. This construction shows the innate property of the subject instead of expressing a passive relation. The formation of Middle Construction originates from the different cognitive process of relevant event and the different cognitive perspectives of participants.
