The Overview of Discourse Analysis and Its Approaches

Discourse analysis, as an independent discipline, has been vastly investigated in the academy of linguistics. It is especially important to define some concepts like discourse and conversational turn, etc. The data of discourse has wide range of forms. Accordingly, the approaches of discourse analysis can be found in various fashions. The first one is structure analysis approach focusing on the structure of language. The second approach is socio cultural analysis emphasizing on interaction between people and social context. The third is cognitive analysis aiming at the production and understanding of language. The fourth is critical discourse analysis putting efforts on political topics. The last one is integrated approaches combining the advantages of each approach.
