竺可桢教授是我国现代地理学奠基人．他任中国科学院副院长期间，首先提出结合经济建设建立新地理学的方针，在此方针指导下，以大科学观成功地组织、领导了全国性现代地理考察活动，并运用现代思维方式研究地理科学，对地理学许多领域在当代的发展提出创造性见解一从而对我国现代地理学知识结构、科学研究活动及科学实践功能三方面体系的形成和发展做出巨大贡献．以此竺可桢成为我国现代地理学奠基人一

Zhu Ke Zhen-The Founder of Modern Geography of China

Professr Zhu Ke Zhen was the founder of the modern geography of our country. During his term of office as the vice-president of Science Academy of China,the first put for-wad the guiding principle that a fresh geogtaphy discipline be established by integrating with economic construction. Under this guiding principle, and with the grand scientific wiew,he succeeded in origanizing and leading the nation-wide modern geographical investigation activities;furthermore he applied modern mode of thinking to research geography, and advanced many original ideas about the development of various fields of geography in the modern time. On this account,he made his great contributions to the forming and developing of modern geography's three subsystems;the knowledge structure,the Scientific research activity,and the scientific practice function. By virtue of those contributions,Prof. Zhu-Kezhen gained his position as the founder of the moden geograply of China.
