Strategies of cost-effective seismic rehabilitation for existing structures

As a basic principle on performance based seismic design and rehabilitation, cost effectiveness criterion shows the important change in the concept of modern structural seismic design and rehabilitation, in which more attention is paid to the performance, safety and economy of the structure. The thoughts of performance based seismic design and cost effectiveness are introduced briefly. Cost effectiveness criterion based formulation of seismic optimization design is obtained, and the results of numerical example show that the optimum solution of this optimization problem is a base isolation design. Finally, the strategies of cost effective seismic rehabilitation for existing structures are discussed, and the solution is for the higher seismic rehabilitation objectives, seismic base isolation technique is a reasonable rehabilitation strategy.
