| Abstract: | Measurement of cytoplasmic free calcium, Ca2+]i, in single human endothelial cells has shown that low doses of the inflammatory mediator histamine evoke asynchronous repetitive spikes in Ca2+]i whereas high doses cause a maintained elevated Ca2+]i. We discuss possible regulatory mechanisms, and the potential physiological and pathological implications of such a frequency-modulated Ca2+]i signalling system. |
