在传统经济向市场经济的过渡中,英国的中小城镇历经变迁,多数城镇表现出了恒久的生命力,不断地调整自己,在激烈的市场竞争中保持自己的特色;另有一些城镇则抓住新的发展机遇,迅速地崛起,成为现代城市体系的重要中心;少数城镇则持续地衰退,最终被淘汰出局。在前工业时期,英国中小城镇渐趋专业化,从而形成了城市发展的多元化格局。

The Development of Towns in Pre-Industrial England

In the transformation from the traditional economy to market economy,the English towns of small and medium sizes experienced varied changes.Many of them could remain their vital forces and features through constantly adjusting their developing directions in the drastic market competition.Some towns rapidly grew up,which got hold of new opportunities and became important centers of modern urbanization.A few English towns declined and been finally washed out.The development of English towns was so specialized that a diversified structure of towns came forth in the pre-industrial period.
