Waiting for the Future in Vain--The Teenagers Images in Su Tong's "Xiangchenshu Street Series"

Su Tong's "Xiang Chenshu Street Series" is a novel representing the writer's childhood memories. It tells stories ofthe teenagers who wandered in the old Xiangchenshu Street during the 1960s and 1970s. In such an environment, which wasisolated, lonely, gloomy, dissipated and like a big pit, teenagers with distorted, turbulent, ignorant and perplexed souls were waitingfor the future without any result. The paper offers an analysis to these teenager's survival and their mentality and points out thatthe narrator is reflecting on the big pit in the past while standing on the ground now, which therefore gives his narration both thetrue experience of that hopeless and helpless life and the profound reflection at a distance. And the paper also shows some sort ofaloofness implied in this narration of the memories, which more or less reduces the humanitarian concern.
