Abstract:In this paper, the ferron method and ~(27)Al NMR spectroscopy were used toinvestigate the effect of SO_4~(2-) on the olation polymerization of hydroxyalu-minum chloride. The ferron method shows that the content ofAlO_4Al_(12)(OH)_(24)(H_2O)_(12)]~(7+)(Al_(13)) decreases with increasing SO_4~(2-) while ~(27)Al NMRspectra demonstrate further that the decrease of Al_(13) is due to the substitutionof AlO_4 in the spherical cluster polyion Al_(13) by SO_4~(2-), resulting in a newcluster polyion SO_4Al_(12)(OH)_(24)(H_2O)_(12)]~(10+). In comparison of the results of thesetwo methods it was found that the rate of decrease of Al_(13) with the increaeof SO_4~(2-) is related closely to the method of preparation of polyhydroxyaluminumchloride.
