Terrestrial isopods and myriapods in a forested scree slope: subterranean biodiversity,depth gradient and annual dynamics

Diversity, depth distribution and seasonal activity of isopods and myriapods were studied using subterranean traps buried in a forested limestone scree slope in the ?ierna Hora Mts, Western Carpathians, Slovakia, throughout the depth gradient from 5 to 95 cm. A total of five isopod, 13 diplopod and 11 chilopod species were identified. Most edaphic species strongly preferred the uppermost organic soil layers. Among the species captured, some represented rare stenoecous Carpathian endemics, namely the isopod Trichoniscus carpaticus, and diplopods Julus curvicornis and Leptoiulus mariae. Others were subterranean forms, partly adapted to hypogean conditions: the isopod Mesoniscus graniger, and diplopods Mecogonopodium carpathicum and Trachysphaera costata. The annual activity in the vast majority of the species ceased completely in winter, and was gradually relaunched in spring. In evaluating the age structure of two predominant diplopods Polydesmus denticulatus and Mecogonopodium carpathicum, both widespread across the depth gradient, a vertical segregation of early post-embryonic stages was found. While P. denticulatus tended to undergo the early stages of development in the soil-filled topmost levels, the early juvenile stage of M. carpathicum was distributed deep in the scree slope profile.     

New species of Pauropodidae (Myriapoda: Pauropoda) from Nanjing,China

Six new species in the family Pauropodidae are described from China: Allopauropus disphaeroides sp. n., A. crassescens sp. n., A. apicalis sp. n., A. nanjingensis sp. n., Pauropus dorsappendix sp. n., and Stylopauropus zijinensis sp. n.     

Four new species of Pauropodidae (Myriapoda: Pauropoda) from Zhejiang and Jiangsu Provinces,east China

Four new species of the family Pauropodidae are described from East China: Allopauropus lasiochlamis sp. nov. and Donzelotauropus lanceus sp. nov. from Tianmu Mountain, Zhejiang Province, and Allopauropus tetrachotomous sp. nov. and Allopauropus tristylus sp. nov. from Qixia Mountain, Jiangsu Province.     

The scolopendromorph centipedes of St John,U.S. Virgin Islands collected by Dr W. B. Muchmore

A collection of scolopendromorph centipedes from the U.S. Virgin Islands is described. It comprises five species Scolopendra alternans, Cormocephalus impulsus sp. nov., Otostigmus (Parotostigmus) caraibicus, Newportia longitarsis virginensis subsp. nov., and Cryptops neocaledonicus muchmorei subsp. nov.     

The henicopid centipede Haasiella (Chilopoda: Lithobiomorpha): new species from Australia,with a morphology-based phylogeny of Henicopidae

Paralamyctes (Haasiella) Pocock, 1901 (= Wailamyctes Archey, 1917) includes three described species from New Zealand and its Subantarctic Islands. Australian species of P. (Haasiella) include P. (H.) subicolus n. sp. from Tasmania and a clade composed of P. (H.) cammooensis n. sp. from Queensland and New South Wales, P. (H.) ginini n. sp. from New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory, and an allied species from Tasmania. Monophyly of P. (Haasiella) and the membership of a P. (H.) cammooensis Group are supported by parsimony analysis of morphological characters. A grouping of P. (Haasiella) and P. (Thingathinga) as retrieved by molecular data analysis is also found in minimal length cladograms based on morphology. The dataset incorporates new information on several previously poorly known henicopids, including the types of Lamyctopristus Attems, 1928, and Analamyctes Chamberlin, 1955.
