Analysis on the Reasons and the Elimination of Sexism in English Language

英汉语言中的性别歧视现象及其文化根源

在英汉两种语言中存在着不同程度的性别歧视现象,它们各有其表现形式,也各有其产生的文化根源。本文旨在分析英汉两种语言中的性别歧视现象及其产生的文化根源。     

SEXISM IN ENGLISH

The language a culture uses reveals the values and beliefs of that culture. Sexism in the English language is discussed from both linguistic form and conversational style in this paper. The correction of this problem has also been raised and several suggestions are given in the end of this paper. Sexism in English language reflects the sexism in our thoughts, so sexism will not disappear from the language we use until it is completely erased from our mind.     

从美国英语中的“女性语体”探析两性语言的强弱模式

人类社会由男性和女性共同组成,男女两性语言差异存在于不同文化之中。语言作为社会的一面镜子反映人们所处的时代、社会心理和社会意识,是现实生活最真实的反映。女性被视为弱势群体在语言使用中的例子比比皆是。本文从社会语言学角度分析美国英语中"女性语体"的主要特征及其形成原因,揭示和解释一些语言现象,并从语言的角度分析传统社会中女性的形象,以及两性语言的强弱模式。     

论性别歧视——英语谚语观

本文从女性的不同方面如地位、外貌、言行、智慧、贞操、软弱以及婚姻等,研究了英语谚语中的性别歧视,以此来表现社会中的性别歧视现象。这里指出了女性较之男性偏低的社会地位,同时讨论了不同时期影响女性地位低的社会、历史、及文化根源。而这些根源又和当今女性的社会状况得到改观有着密切的联系。尽管如此,要根本改善这一状况需要社会各界长期不懈的努力与合作。     

Indirect Sexism in Discourse

This thesis draws attention to one of the most vigorous debate in sociolinguistics,sexism in discourse,despite the chicken-and egg question whether it is our language shape sexism or sexism creates certain language.Unlike most researches conducted in sexism and language in the past,we challenge the traditional notion of linguistic sexism and direct our view to what we call "an indirect sexism" here.We then argue the difference between direct and indirect sexism and depict how such an undercurrent drives secretly and carefully in our daily discourse.
