Summary The suitability of urethane anesthesia for physiopharmacological investigations is reviewed. Total dose administered and route of administration are recognized as factors having a great influence on both resting parameters and biological responses to drugs. A peculiar characteristic of urethane is represented by its ability to induce a surgical plane of anesthesia without affecting neurotransmission in various subcortical areas and the peripheral nervous system. This makes urethane a suitable general anesthetic for studying neural function in both central and peripheral nervous systems and accounts for the preservation of a number of reflex responses in urethane-anesthetized animals. 相似文献

Summary The suitability of urethane anesthesia for physiopharmacological experiments in various systems is briefly reviewed. Urethane anesthesia appears to be suitable for various types of studies on respiratory function and on reflex activation of motility of the urinary bladder and some sections of the intestinal tract. However, urethane produces a variety of potentially disturbing side-effects at endocrine and renal level. 相似文献

Summary Crayfish escape from predators by a series of rapid tailflips. The production of this seemingly simple behavior involves the interaction of multiple neural control mechanisms. The rapid flexion phase of the first tailflip is a fixed action pattern that is always organized by giant command neurons. Subsequent reextension is a chain reflex mediated by sensory feedback from the initial flexion. All following tailflips are produced by a non-gialnt system which is activated in parallel with the giant system by the escape-initiating stimulus. Proper integration of the giant system and the non-giant system is mediated by a reaction time mechanism. 相似文献

Summary Urethane produces a level of surgical anesthesia characterized by preservation of a number of cardiovascular reflexes. When the proper route of administration is used, and the use of unnecessarily high doses is avoided, urethane anesthesia appears to be suitable for a number of investigations at cardiovascular level. However in certain types of studies involving pharmacological stimulation of peripheral adrenoceptors urethane affects markedly the magnitude of the response under study. 相似文献

Summary Neurochemical and pharmacological experiments have raised the possibility that several neuropeptides including, vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP), peptide histidine isoleucine amide (PHI), substance P, calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), neurokinin A, cholecystokinin (CCK) and opioid peptides may be transmitters in afferent pathways to the pelvic viscera. These substances are widely distributed in: 1) nerve fibers in the pelvic organs, 2) visceral afferent neurons in the lumbosacral dorsal root ganglia and 3) at sites of afferent termination in the spinal cord. Double, staining immunocytochemical techniques have shown that more than one peptide can be localized in individual visceral afferent neurons and that neuronal excitatory (VIP, substance P, CCK) and inhibitory peptides (leucine enkephalin) can coexist in the same afferent cell. Studies with the neurotoxin, capsaicin, indicate that peptidergic afferent pathways are, involved in the initiation of central autonomic reflexes as well as peripheral axon reflexes which modulate smooth muscle activity, facilitate transmission in automatic ganglia and trigger local inflammatory responses. 相似文献
