In vivo effects of Escherichia coli endotoxin on sulfobromophthalein clearance in the guinea-pig.

In vivo studies indicated that the primary effects of E. coli endotoxin on hepatic clearance of sulfobromophthalein were at the excretory level. Newborns were more sensitive to the LPS than older animals.     

Queen retrieval in the Argentine ant

Queen retrieval recruitment in ants is the recruitment of workers towards queens which are outside the nest, using chemical trails. The odour trails enable the queens to orient rapidly and return to the nest. This behaviour, reported for the first time in the Argentine antIridomyrmex humilis, is briefly discussed with regard to its possible adaptative significance.

Summary Our experiments, made possible by the utilisation of the injectable acetyl-salicylate lysine salt solution, lead us to conclude that acetyl-salicylique acid has a parasympathicomimetic action on the pupil of the mice, on the intestine of the dog and on the bronchi of the guinea-pig.     

Geranylgeranylacetone protects human monocytes from mitochondrial membrane depolarization independently of Hsp70 expression

The anti-ulcer drug geranylgeranylacetone (GGA) has been shown to induce the expression of heat shock proteins (HSPs), in particular of Hsp70, in gastric and small intestine cells. In this study, we investigated whether GGA was able to induce Hsp70 in another cell type, human monocytes, which represent a well-established model of Hsp70 expression under oxidative stress. In these cells, GGA had no significant effect either on basal or tobacco smoke-induced Hsp70 expression. We further investigated the effects of GGA on mitochondria, a key organelle of oxidant-mediated cell injury and a putative target for GGA-mediated protection. GGA significantly increased basal mitochondrial membrane polarization and inhibited the decrease in mitochondrial membrane potential of human monocytes exposed to distinct sources of clinically relevant oxidants such as tobacco smoke and y-irradiation. Our results indicate that mitochondria are targets for GGA-mediated protection against oxidative stress in human monocytes, independently of Hsp70.     

Evidence tha a ‘critical period’ is involved in early estrogen-induced LH- and FSH-release during the estrous cycle in the rat

Summary LH- and FSH-release, which occurred in the afternoon of diestrus 1 following estradiol benzoate administration in the morning of estrus, was completely prevented by pentobarbital, when injected on diestrus 1 at 13.30 h.This investigation was partially financed by the CNRS (ERA 566).Acknowledgments.
