Localization of the human GM-CSF receptor gene to the X-Y pseudoautosomal region

Mammalian sex chromosomes share a small terminal region of homologous DNA sequences, which pair and recombine during male meiosis. Alleles in this region can be exchanged between X and Y chromosomes and are therefore inherited as if autosomal. Genes from this so-called pseudoautosomal region (PAR) are present in two doses in both males and females, and escape inactivation of the X chromosome in females. Indirect evidence suggests that there must be several pseudoautosomal genes, and several candidates have been proposed. Until now, the only gene that has been unequivocally located in the PAR is MIC2, which encodes a cell-surface antigen of unknown function. We now report the localization of a gene of known function to this region--the gene for the receptor of the haemopoietic regulator, granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor. The chromosomal localization of this gene may be important in understanding the generation of M2 acute myeloid leukaemia.     

Prediction of Emperor-Hawaii seamount locations from a revised model of global plate motion and mantle flow

The bend in the Hawaiian-Emperor seamount chain is a prominent feature usually attributed to a change in Pacific plate motion approximately 47 Myr ago. However, global plate motion reconstructions fail to predict the bend. Here we show how the geometry of the Hawaiian-Emperor chain and other hotspot tracks can be explained when we combine global plate motions with intraplate deformation and movement of hotspot plumes through distortion by global mantle flow. Global mantle flow models predict a southward motion of the Hawaiian hotspot. This, in combination with a plate motion reconstruction connecting Pacific and African plates through Antarctica, predicts the Hawaiian track correctly since the date of the bend, but predicts the chain to be too far west before it. But if a reconstruction through Australia and Lord Howe rise is used instead, the track is predicted correctly back to 65 Myr ago, including the bend. The difference between the two predictions indicates the effect of intraplate deformation not yet recognized or else not recorded on the ocean floor. The remaining misfit before 65 Myr ago can be attributed to additional intraplate deformation of similar magnitude.

The constitutions of glauconic,glaucanic and byssochlamic acids

Zusammenfassung Die Struktur der Pilzstoffwechselprodukte Glaucon- und Glaucansäure (C₁₈H₂₀O₇ bzw. C₁₈H₂₀O₆) ausPenicill. purp. wird in der Hauptsache durch das Studium der Reduktionsprodukte ermittelt. Diese Verbindungen enthalten zwei fünfgliedrige Säureanhydrid-Gruppierungen, die mit einem eigenartigen doppelt ungesättigten neungliedrigen Ringsystem gekuppelt sind, das unter verschiedenen Bedingungen in das Indangerüst übergeführt werden kann.Wie schon früher beschrieben, wird Glauconsäure leicht pyrolytisch zu Diäthylacrolein und Glauconin abgebaut. Die Formel des Glauconins, die durch Spektralmessungen und Synthese bewiesen wurde, ist für die Konstitutionsaufklärung der Glauconsäure in gewisser Hinsicht irreführend, da das Kohlenstoffskelett des Glauconins nicht schon in der Glauconsäure vorliegt, sondern erst durch eine Umlagerung unter Bildung neuer C-C-Bindungen bei der Spaltung der Glauconsäure entsteht.Die Biogenese der beiden Säuren wird diskutiert; sie scheint auf der Verknüpfung zweier Fragmente mit neun Kohlenstoffatomen und identischem Gerüst zu beruhen. Die Annahme einer andersartigen Verknüpfung der beiden Fragmente führt zu einer möglichen Struktur für Byssochlamsäure, C₁₈H₂₀O₇. Die so abgeleitete Konstitution wird durch röntgenkristallographische Strukturbestimmung bestätigt.Byssochlamsäure, ausByssochlamys fulva, enthält ebenfalls ein neungliedriges, doppelt ungesättigtes Ringsystem sowie zwei fünfgliedrige Säureanhydrid-Gruppierungen und zeigt die Tendenz, Indanderivate zu bilden. Ihr chemisches Verhalten wird anhand der durch Röntgenstrahlenkristallographie bestimmten Struktur diskutiert.
