Chemical modification of genetic damage from continuous irradiation in mice

Summary It has been demonstrated that Adeturon (S-2-aminoethyl-iso-thiuronium adenosine triphosphate) showed a marked protective effect against translocations induction in mice germ cells after chronic -or neutron-irradiation.     

Distribution of polyamine oxidase activity in rat tissues and subcellular fractions

The activity of polyamine oxidase (PAO) in rat tissues, and its subcellular distribution, were assayed using a simple polarographic method. The highest PAO activity was measured in the liver and the lowest in the skeletal muscle. In liver, kidney and uterus the highest specific PAO activity was found in the light mitochondrial fraction. PAO was not found in the microsomal fraction except in the kidney.     

Spreading of nanofluids on solids

Suspensions of nanometre-sized particles (nanofluids) are used in a variety of technological contexts. For example, their spreading and adhesion behaviour on solid surfaces can yield materials with desirable structural and optical properties. Similarly, the spreading behaviour of nanofluids containing surfactant micelles has implications for soil remediation, oily soil removal, lubrication and enhanced oil recovery. But the well-established concepts of spreading and adhesion of simple liquids do not apply to nanofluids. Theoretical investigations have suggested that a solid-like ordering of suspended spheres will occur in the confined three-phase contact region at the edge of the spreading fluid, becoming more disordered and fluid-like towards the bulk phase. Calculations have also suggested that the pressure arising from such colloidal ordering in the confined region will enhance the spreading behaviour of nanofluids. Here we use video microscopy to demonstrate both the two-dimensional crystal-like ordering of charged nanometre-sized polystyrene spheres in water, and the enhanced spreading dynamics of a micellar fluid, at the three-phase contact region. Our findings suggest a new mechanism for oily soil removal--detergency.     

Crystal structure of an Eph receptor-ephrin complex.

The Eph family of receptor tyrosine kinases and their membrane-anchored ephrin ligands are important in regulating cell-cell interactions as they initiate a unique bidirectional signal transduction cascade whereby information is communicated into both the Eph-expressing and the ephrin-expressing cells. Initially identified as regulators of axon pathfinding and neuronal cell migration, Ephs and ephrins are now known to have roles in many other cell-cell interactions, including those of vascular endothelial cells and specialized epithelia. Here we report the crystal structure of the complex formed between EphB2 and ephrin-B2, determined at 2.7 A resolution. Each Eph receptor binds an ephrin ligand through an expansive dimerization interface dominated by the insertion of an extended ephrin loop into a channel at the surface of the receptor. Two Eph-Ephrin dimers then join to form a tetramer, in which each ligand interacts with two receptors and each receptor interacts with two ligands. The Eph and ephrin molecules are precisely positioned and orientated in these complexes, promoting higher-order clustering and the initiation of bidirectional signalling.

Consensus supertrees: The synthesis of rooted trees containing overlapping sets of labeled leaves

Given two dendrograms (rooted tree diagrams) which have some but not all of their base points in common, a supertree is a dendrogram from which each of the original trees can be regarded as samples The distinction is made between inconsistent and consistent sample trees, defined by whether or not the samples provide contradictory information about the supertree An algorithm for obtaining the strict consensus supertree of two consistent sample trees is presented, as are procedures for merging two inconsistent sample trees Some suggestions for future work are made     

Purification and some properties of an amine oxidase from soybean seedlings

Summary An amine oxidase was purified 447-fold from soybean seedlings and some of its properties were investigated. The molecular weight of the enzyme was estimated to be 25,000. It was most active towards putrescine, followed by spermidine and spermine. K_m-values for these substrates were relatively close. The enzyme was strongly inhibited by carbonyl reagents, such as semicarbazide and aminoguanidine.     

Identification of loci associated with schizophrenia by genome-wide association and follow-up

We carried out a genome-wide association study of schizophrenia (479 cases, 2,937 controls) and tested loci with P < 10(-5) in up to 16,726 additional subjects. Of 12 loci followed up, 3 had strong independent support (P < 5 x 10(-4)), and the overall pattern of replication was unlikely to occur by chance (P = 9 x 10(-8)). Meta-analysis provided strongest evidence for association around ZNF804A (P = 1.61 x 10(-7)) and this strengthened when the affected phenotype included bipolar disorder (P = 9.96 x 10(-9)).
