Imaging of Titan from the Cassini spacecraft

Titan, the largest moon of Saturn, is the only satellite in the Solar System with a substantial atmosphere. The atmosphere is poorly understood and obscures the surface, leading to intense speculation about Titan's nature. Here we present observations of Titan from the imaging science experiment onboard the Cassini spacecraft that address some of these issues. The images reveal intricate surface albedo features that suggest aeolian, tectonic and fluvial processes; they also show a few circular features that could be impact structures. These observations imply that substantial surface modification has occurred over Titan's history. We have not directly detected liquids on the surface to date. Convective clouds are found to be common near the south pole, and the motion of mid-latitude clouds consistently indicates eastward winds, from which we infer that the troposphere is rotating faster than the surface. A detached haze at an altitude of 500 km is 150-200 km higher than that observed by Voyager, and more tenuous haze layers are also resolved.     

Postnatal loss of Dlk1 imprinting in stem cells and niche astrocytes regulates neurogenesis

The gene for the atypical NOTCH ligand delta-like homologue 1 (Dlk1) encodes membrane-bound and secreted isoforms that function in several developmental processes in vitro and in vivo. Dlk1, a member of a cluster of imprinted genes, is expressed from the paternally inherited chromosome. Here we show that mice that are deficient in Dlk1 have defects in postnatal neurogenesis in the subventricular zone: a developmental continuum that results in depletion of mature neurons in the olfactory bulb. We show that DLK1 is secreted by niche astrocytes, whereas its membrane-bound isoform is present in neural stem cells (NSCs) and is required for the inductive effect of secreted DLK1 on self-renewal. Notably, we find that there is a requirement for Dlk1 to be expressed from both maternally and paternally inherited chromosomes. Selective absence of Dlk1 imprinting in both NSCs and niche astrocytes is associated with postnatal acquisition of DNA methylation at the germ-line-derived imprinting control region. The results emphasize molecular relationships between NSCs and the niche astrocyte cells of the microenvironment, identifying a signalling system encoded by a single gene that functions coordinately in both cell types. The modulation of genomic imprinting in a stem-cell environment adds a new level of epigenetic regulation to the establishment and maintenance of the niche, raising wider questions about the adaptability, function and evolution of imprinting in specific developmental contexts.     

Fibre science: supercontraction stress in wet spider dragline

Unrestrained spider dragline 'super-contracts' when it is wetted, causing its length to shrink by about half and its diameter to almost double. Here we measure the supercontraction stresses generated upon initial exposure of spider dragline to moisture and find that they are transient, as well as being greater than previously estimated. Our findings cast doubt on suggestions that supercontraction may help to maintain tension in wet webs and could limit the potential load-bearing applications of silk and its analogues.     

Short-term oscillations in sign of phototaxis in the eyed hawk caterpillar (Smerinthus ocellata L.)

Zusammenfassung Raupen vonSmerinthus ocellata L. im dritten bis fünften Larvenstadium zeigen im Phototaxisversuch unregelmäsig periodische Umkehr der Kriechrichtung (Fig. 1). Aus der weiteren Analyse der experimentellen Daten ergibt sich, dass dieser Richtungswechsel in der Mehrzahl der Fälle durch einen tatsächlichen Umschlag des Richtungssinnes der Phototaxis verursacht wird.     

Pentobarbital detoxification by the regenerated liver of partially hepatectomized rats

Résumé La prolongation de l'anesthésie au pentobarbital fut constatée chez les rats pendant 1 semaine après l'hépatectomie partielle. Dans la suite, l'effet disparut. Le poids du foie était redevenu presque normal dès le 4ème jour. Les tissus hépatiques nouvellement formés ont donc été temporairement incapables de métaboliser le barbiturique.     

Diet switching and food delivery by shrubsteppe passerines in response to an experimental reduction in food

We experimentally reduced the food base of nesting Brewer's Sparrows ( Spizella breweri ) and Sage Thrashers ( Oreoscoptes montanus ) in a shrubsteppe region of south central Idaho in 1989 and 1990. Frequency and mass of "birdfood" arthropods in pitfall, sweep net, and stickyboard samples were generally lower on sites treated with a broad-spectrum insecticide (malathion) than on untreated sites though the effect varied among taxa. In 1990 O. montanus switched nestling diets to prey taxa not affected by the treatment. Time between nestling food deliveries was greater for S. breweri on the treated than untreated site in 1989. In 1990 there were no between-site differences, but there was an increase in delivery time on the treated plot after treatment; this difference was within the range of delivery times recorded on the untreated plot. Malathion applications did reduce the food base, but plasticity in passerine behavior and emergence characteristics of some prey taxa ameliorated indirect effects of food reduction to birds.
