It is with good reason that the name Rutherford is closely linked with the early history of the alpha particle. He discovered them, determined their nature, and from 1909 used them to probe the structure of the atom. From 1898 to 1902 Rutherford construed alpha radiation as a type of non-particulate Röntgen radiation. On his theory of the locomotion of radioactive particles Rutherford proposed that alpha radiation consisted of negatively charged particles. During 1902 he confirmed the particulate nature of alpha radiation but discovered that these alpha particles were positively charged. Although Rutherford suspected from 1903 that these alpha particles were related somehow with helium, the proof required six long years of investigation. By mid-1908 it seemed certain that the alpha particle possessed two units of the elementary charge. Since the e/m ratio had already been determined for alpha particles, this evidence enhanced the suspected connection with helium. However, this gain and loss of charge was still construed as an ionization effect. Since as late as 1908 gaseous ionization was assumed to involve the gain or loss of a single unit of charge, Rutherford's alleged case of doubly ionized alpha particles was presumably an exception. Yet helium was known to be an inert gas and thus hardly a likely candidate for such exceptional ionization behaviour. To establish the connection, therefore, Rutherford resorted to a spectroscopic test. He collected spent alpha particles shot into a thin glass tube and gradually observed the spectrum of helium. Rutherford had thus been correct in his assumption, but a proper explanation was possible only after the confirmation of the nuclear structure of the atom.  相似文献

Summary The color mosaicism was observed to correlate with selective herbivory on different leaf areas of individual leaves of the variegated sycamoreAcer pseudoplatanus. The mosaicism affected the content of nutrients and of phenolic compounds and also the mechanical properties of the different leaf areas; this offers an explanation for the observed selective feeding by insect herbivores.Acknowledgments. It is argued that Hugo de Vries's conversion to Mendelism did not agree with his previous theoretical framework. De Vries regarded the number of offspring expressing a certain character as a hereditary quality, intrinsic to the state of the pangene involved. His was a shortlived conversion since after the ‘rediscovery’ he failed to unify his older views with Mendelism. De Vries was never very much of a Mendelian. The usual stories of the Dutch ‘rediscovery’ need, therefore, a considerable reshaping.  相似文献

Gaussian distribution has for several decades been ubiquitous in the theory and practice of statistical classification. Despite the early proposals motivating the use of predictive inference to design a classifier, this approach has gained relatively little attention apart from certain specific applications, such as speech recognition where its optimality has been widely acknowledged. Here we examine statistical properties of different inductive classification rules under a generic Gaussian model and demonstrate the optimality of considering simultaneous classification of multiple samples under an attractive loss function. It is shown that the simpler independent classification of samples leads asymptotically to the same optimal rule as the simultaneous classifier when the amount of training data increases, if the dimensionality of the feature space is bounded in an appropriate manner. Numerical investigations suggest that the simultaneous predictive classifier can lead to higher classification accuracy than the independent rule in the low-dimensional case, whereas the simultaneous approach suffers more from noise when the dimensionality increases.  相似文献

Autosomal recessive primary microcephaly (MCPH) is characterized by a substantial reduction in prenatal human brain growth without alteration of the cerebral architecture and is caused by biallelic mutations in genes coding for a subset of centrosomal proteins. Although at least three of these proteins have been implicated in centrosome duplication, the nature of the centrosome dysfunction that underlies the neurodevelopmental defect in MCPH is unclear. Here we report a homozygous MCPH-causing mutation in human CEP63. CEP63 forms a complex with another MCPH protein, CEP152, a conserved centrosome duplication factor. Together, these two proteins are essential for maintaining normal centrosome numbers in cells. Using super-resolution microscopy, we found that CEP63 and CEP152 co-localize in a discrete ring around the proximal end of the parental centriole, a pattern specifically disrupted in CEP63-deficient cells derived from patients with MCPH. This work suggests that the CEP152-CEP63 ring-like structure ensures normal neurodevelopment and that its impairment particularly affects human cerebral cortex growth.  相似文献
