Isolation of type II epithelial cells from rabbit fetal lungs by adherence on an IgG-coated surface

The lung is comprised of about 40 different cell types, of which only 15% are type II cells. These are the major, if not the sole, source of synthesis and secretion of lung surfactant. To date a large number of methods have been described for the isolation of pure populations of type II cells using a wide variety of techniques, but most of these have employed differential centrifugation methods and have used adult rodents. The present study reports the isolation of type II cells from fetal rabbit lungs by the immunoglobin G plating method. Pure populations of fetal type II cells in high yield and with good viability were obtained by the procedure for the first time from rabbit fetal tissue.

Zusammenfassung An regenerierenden Süsswasserpolypen (Hydra vulgaris orientalis) wurde die Gesamtmenge der Epithelmuskelzellen, der interstitiellen Zellen und der Cnidoblasten bestimmt. Dabei wurden sehr grosse Zellverluste, speziell bei den interstitiellen Zellen, in geringerem Masse bei den Epithelmuskelzellen festgestellt. Die Zahl der Cnidoblasten nahm dagegen etwas zu.

Light dependent accumulation of macrophages at the photoreceptor-pigment epithelial interface in the retina of albino mice

Summary In the subretinal space of albino mice, macrophages appear from the time of eye opening and increase in number for 6 months; thereafter they decline with age. Dark rearing retards the accumulation of these cells, and exposure to constant light results in a rapid increase. Observations suggest that macrophages appear as a response to visual cell decay in albino mice and supplement the phagocytic activity of the pigment epithelium.We thank R.K. Stimulation of gastric secretion by prostaglandin F2 α in rats

Summary In rats with chronic gastric fistulas, prostaglandin F₂ stimulated the gastric acid secretion in graded doses of 50. 100, 200 and 400 g/kg b. wt, while higher doses above 1 mg/kg b. wt tended to inhibit significantly. The gastric antisecretory effect of prostaglandin E₁ could not be altered or modified by subsequent treatment of prostaglandin F₂ , while the latter alone without any prior treatment of the former, stimulated output of gastric juice, HCl and pepsin without significantly affecting the concentration of these components.Acknowledgement. Role of 5-hydroxytryptamine in prostaglandin E1-induced potentiation of hexobarbitone hypnosis in albino rats.

PGE1 potentiated, while diclofenac, a prostaglandin synthesis inhibitor, antagonized hexobarbitone hypnosis in rats. PGE1-induced potentiation of hexobarbitone sleep was inhibited by a 5HT synthesis inhibitor and by a 5HT receptor blocker, suggesting that this potentiation is 5HT mediated.
