Excretion of acid hydrolases during molting inPhilosamia ricini

Summary The level of the acid hydrolases -glucuronidase (EC 3.2.3.11), acid phosphatase (EC 3.1.3.2) and acid protease (EC 3.4.4) was studied during larval growth and molting inP. ricini. The level of activity of these enzymes remained low during larval growth; however, the level increased sharply at the time of molting and declined sharply thereafter in the newly ecdysed insect. Interestingly, the diminished activity of these enzymes was almost quantitatively recovered in the cast-off cuticle. The excretion of acid hydrolases through the cast-off cuticle has hitherto not been reported in insects during molting.

Toxicity of Temik (aldicarb) for a fresh water teleost,Barbus conchonius Hamilton

Summary The toxic effects of Temik (aldicarb) on a fresh water Himalyan lake teleost,Barbus conchonius were investigated in hard and soft water. The 48-, 72- and 96-h TL_m-values in mg/l were 8.99, 2.39 and 2.42 respectively in the hard-water test and 3.30, 0.62 and 0.46 in the soft-water test. The toxicity of Temik toB. conchonius increases many fold in soft water.One of us (S. C. P.) is grateful to U. G. C., for the award of a senior research fellowship.     

Testing for unreliable estimators and insignificant forecasts in combined forecasts

The reliability and precision of the weights used in combining individual forecasts, irrespective of the method of combination, is important in evaluating a combined forecast. The objective of this study is not to suggest the ‘best’ method of combining individual forecasts, but rather to propose exploratory procedures, that make use of all available sample information contained in the covariance matrix of individual forecast errors, to (1) detect if the weights used in combining forecasts are ‘reliable’ (and ‘stable’ if it is known that the covariance matrix of forecast errors is stationary over time) and (2) test for ‘insignificant’ individual forecasts used in forming a combined forecast. We present empirical applications using two-year sales and individual forecast data provided by a major consumer durables manufacturer to illustrate the feasibility of our proposed procedures.     

Poly(ADP-ribosyl)ation regulates CTCF-dependent chromatin insulation

Chromatin insulators demarcate expression domains by blocking the cis effects of enhancers or silencers in a position-dependent manner. We show that the chromatin insulator protein CTCF carries a post-translational modification: poly(ADP-ribosyl)ation. Chromatin immunoprecipitation analysis showed that a poly(ADP-ribosyl)ation mark, which exclusively segregates with the maternal allele of the insulator domain in the H19 imprinting control region, requires the bases that are essential for interaction with CTCF. Chromatin immunoprecipitation-on-chip analysis documented that the link between CTCF and poly(ADP-ribosyl)ation extended to more than 140 mouse CTCF target sites. An insulator trap assay showed that the insulator function of most of these CTCF target sites is sensitive to 3-aminobenzamide, an inhibitor of poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase activity. We suggest that poly(ADP-ribosyl)ation imparts chromatin insulator properties to CTCF at both imprinted and nonimprinted loci, which has implications for the regulation of expression domains and their demise in pathological lesions.     

Crystal structure of the phosphotyrosine recognition domain SH2 of v-src complexed with tyrosine-phosphorylated peptides.

Three-dimensional structures of complexes of the SH2 domain of the v-src oncogene product with two phosphotyrosyl peptides have been determined by X-ray crystallography at resolutions of 1.5 and 2.0 A, respectively. A central antiparallel beta-sheet in the structure is flanked by two alpha-helices, with peptide binding mediated by the sheet, intervening loops and one of the helices. The specific recognition of phosphotyrosine involves amino-aromatic interactions between lysine and arginine side chains and the ring system in addition to hydrogen-bonding interactions with the phosphate.     

Ultra-high suppression microwave photonic bandstop filters

A bandstop radio frequency （RF） filter can enhance the capabilities of RF communication systems by removing unwanted signal components such as distortion, or interference. In modem cognitive radio systems, frequency agile filters are desired to block interferers with dynamically changing frequencies and powers. These filters should be tunable over a broad frequency range, and they should be capable of suppressing very strong signals with a high resolution. To simultaneously meet these requirements with traditional RF filters are highly chal- lenging. Microwave photonic （MWP）, a technology that primary deals with the generation, distribution, and processing of high speed RF signals using photonic techniques and components, is promising for creating frequency agile RF filters. However, traditional MWP filters are lacking the high resolution and peak suppression exhibited by state-of-the-art RF electrical filters. We recently introduced a new class of MWP notch filter which is free from this limitation. This scheme allowed the creation of anomalously high suppression MWP notch filter from virtually any kind of optical resonance, irrespective of its type （gain or absorp tion）, or its magnitude. This enabled, for the first time, simultaneous optimization of the MWP filter resolution, peak attenuation, and frequency tuning range. In this paper, we present the analysis of notch filter response creation using the novel sideband processing technique. We then show the applicability of this technique to a wide range of optical filters. We compare simulated and experimental results of the notch filter response created using three types of optical filter commonly used in MWP signal processing, namely stimulated Brillouin scattering （SBS）, an integrated optical ring resonator （ORR）, and a phase-shifted fiber Bragg-grating （FBG）.
