Liver function during chronic renal failure in rabbits

In rabbits with chronic renal insufficiency the prothrombin index was increased by 25% and the alanine aminotransferase activity decreased by 20%; the results of other routine tests of hepatic function were not affected. The galactose elimination capacity was decreased by 12%, whereas the body clearance of antipyrine was unchanged. No change in hepatocytic structure was found.

Zusammenfassung Es wird eine Hemmung der Speichelflussrate in der Submandibularisdrüse der Katze durch den Kohlensäureanhydratasehemmstoff Acetazolamid hervorgerufen und gleichzeitig eine Hemmung der sekretorischen Potentialunterschiede über Azinuszellmembrane gemessen. Die Sekretionshemmung liesse sich durch die Hemmung der sekretorischen Potentiale, die ein Mass für einen aktiven Anionentransport ist, erklären.

Optical detection of meteoroidal impacts on the Moon

Impacts of meteoroids on the Moon should cause detectable optical flashes, but the population of objects that are big enough is very low, and hitherto no unambiguous impact flashes have been recorded. The flux of meteoroids associated with the Leonid meteor shower of 18 November 1999 was predicted to produce observable flashes on the night side of the Moon. Here we report the unambiguous detection of five such impact flashes, three of which were seen simultaneously by other observers. We also observed a possible impact flash on 16 July 1999. All of the flashes were of very brief duration (<0.02 s), as expected for high-speed impacts.     

Flippases: still more questions than answers

Our understanding of flippase-mediated lipid translocation and membrane vesiculation, and the involvement of P-type ATPases in these processes is just beginning to emerge. The results obtained so far demonstrate significant complexity within this field and point to major tasks for future research. Most importantly, biochemical characterization of P₄-ATPases is required in order to clarify whether these transporters indeed are capable of catalyzing transmembrane phospholipid flipping. The β-subunit of P₄-ATPases shows unexpected similarities between the β- and γ-subunits of the Na⁺/K⁺-ATPase. It is likely that these proteins provide a similar solution to similar problems, and might have adopted similar structures to accomplish these tasks. No P₄-ATPases have been identified in the endoplasmic reticulum and it remains an intriguing possibility that, in this compartment, P_5A-ATPases are functional homologues of P₄-ATPases. Zusammenfassung Es wird gezeigt, dass während der Perfusion der Submandibularis-Drüse der Katze mit chloridfreier Sulfatlösung die sekretorischen Potentialdifferenzen der Azinuszellmembran unverändert bleiben und dass inzwischen die Sekretion und der Kaliumtransport von der Drüse zur Perfusionsflüssigkeit völlig aufhört.
