Four-terminal resistance of a ballistic quantum wire

The electrical resistance of a conductor is intimately related to the relaxation of the momentum of charge carriers. In a simple model, the accelerating force exerted on electrons by an applied electric field is balanced by a frictional force arising from their frequent collisions with obstacles such as impurities, grain boundaries or other deviations from a perfect crystalline order. Thus, in the absence of any scattering, the electrical resistance should vanish altogether. Here, we observe such vanishing four-terminal resistance in a single-mode ballistic quantum wire. This result contrasts the value of the standard two-probe resistance measurements of h/2e2 approximately 13 kOmega. The measurements are conducted in the highly controlled geometry afforded by epitaxial growth onto the cleaved edge of a high-quality GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure. Two weakly invasive voltage probes are attached to the central section of a ballistic quantum wire to measure the inherent resistance of this clean one-dimensional conductor.

Summary In this preliminary work, the possibility of dating crystalline rocks by pleochroic haloes has been studied.Halo-microphotometry has been combined with measurement of the alpha-activity of the inclusions by the photographic method.Standard thin sections of well dated granites have been used for calibration purposes. The reciprocity law is shown to be valid within the limit of error. The resolving power of this method depends essentially on the age ratio. Tertiary and primary rocks are easily separated.

Zusammenfassung Es wird ein vorläufiger Maximalwert (60 Millionen Jahre) für das Alter der pleochroitischen Höfe des alpinmetamorphen Medelser-Granites (Gotthardmassiv) mitgeteilt. Das so bestimmte Alter dürfte demjenigen der alpinen Metamorphose entsprechen, welche die Biotite (mit ihren pleochroitischen Höfen) des wohl herzynischen Granites rekristallisieren liess.     

Présence d'uraninite dans les minéraux accessoires du granite de baveno

Summary Microscopic crystals of uraninite are found in the accessories of the Baveno granite by the nuclear photographic emulsion technique. The uraninite is believed to be a primary mineral of the granite, its concentration in the sample is less than 1 p.p.m. but it contributes about 10% of the total activity.     

低碳锰钢中周期性带状组织

用扫描电镜和电子探针研究了低碳锰钢中的周期性带状组织，结果表明，在全部研究用钢中，钢锭经热轧后均出现这种组织，其严重程度随钢的成分而异，并随坯带加工顺序而增加，带状组织与锰的显微偏析等因素有关，适当的调整碳锰以及形成模跨铁素体带的转变产物可降低带状组织的严重程度。     

Etude préliminaire des Halos Pléochroïques de quelques Roches métamorphiques et éruptives du St-Gothard

Zusammenfassung Die Untersuchung der pleochroitischen Höfe der Biotite in Orthogneisen, Paragneisen und Bündnerschiefern des südlichen Gotthardmassives ergab durchwegs ein ähnliches Alter, nämlich < 60 Millionen Jahre. Es bedeutet dies, dass eventuell vorhandene vortertiäre Höfe in prätriadischen Biotiten der Gneise während der alpinen Metamorphose fast oder ganz durch Rekristallisation zerstört worden sind.
