Creep is a time-dependent mechanism of plastic deformation, which takes place in a range of materials under low stress-that is, under stresses lower than the yield stress. Metals and alloys can be designed to withstand creep at high temperatures, usually by a process called dispersion strengthening, in which fine particles are evenly distributed throughout the matrix. For example, high-temperature creep-resistant ferritic steels achieve optimal creep strength (at 923 K) through the dispersion of yttrium oxide nanoparticles. However, the oxide particles are introduced by complicated mechanical alloying techniques and, as a result, the production of large-scale industrial components is economically unfeasible. Here we report the production of a 9 per cent Cr martensitic steel dispersed with nanometre-scale carbonitride particles using conventional processing techniques. At 923 K, our dispersion-strengthened material exhibits a time-to-rupture that is increased by two orders of magnitude relative to the current strongest creep-resistant steels. This improvement in creep resistance is attributed to a mechanism of boundary pinning by the thermally stable carbonitride precipitates. The material also demonstrates enough fracture toughness. Our results should lead to improved grades of creep-resistant steels and to the economical manufacture of large-scale steel components for high-temperature applications.  相似文献

The inflammatory cytokine cascade plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis. Recently, a novel human cytokine, interleukin-32, was reported to induce tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha. Interleukin-32 is expressed primarily in lymphoid tissues and leukocytes, but also in stimulated epithelial cells and synovial fibroblasts. Although the interleukin-32 receptor has not been reported, interleukin-32 can induce other inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-alpha, interleukin-1beta, and interleukin-6 from monocytes/macrophages in vitro and in vivo, and it synergizes with signals from pattern-recognition receptors. Notably, in the inflamed synovial tissues from rheumatoid arthritis patients, interleukin-32 is prominently expressed and correlates with the severity of arthritis and the expression of other cytokines, including TNF-alpha and interleukin-1. In experimental mice models of arthritis, joint injection of interleukin-32 induces joint inflammation, and overexpression of interleukin-32beta in hematopoietic cells exacerbates collagen-induced arthritis. Interleukin-32 can thus be seen to play an important role in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis.  相似文献

Summary The secretion of human calcitonin gene-related peptide was examined in perifusates of medullary carcinoma of the thyroid with a sensitive radioreceptor assay. Calcitonin gene-related peptide was released after the addition of calcium (25–100 mM), in a dose-dependent manner. The results indicate that human medullary carcinomas of the thyroid secrete the calcitonin gene-related peptide as well as calcitonin.  相似文献

Since the discovery of high-transition-temperature (high-T(c)) superconductivity in layered copper oxides, many researchers have searched for similar behaviour in other layered metal oxides involving 3d-transition metals, such as cobalt and nickel. Such attempts have so far failed, with the result that the copper oxide layer is thought to be essential for superconductivity. Here we report that Na(x)CoO2*yH2O (x approximately 0.35, y approximately 1.3) is a superconductor with a T(c) of about 5 K. This compound consists of two-dimensional CoO2 layers separated by a thick insulating layer of Na+ ions and H2O molecules. There is a marked resemblance in superconducting properties between the present material and high-T(c) copper oxides, suggesting that the two systems have similar underlying physics.  相似文献

Endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) is the nitric oxide synthase isoform responsible for maintaining systemic blood pressure, vascular remodelling and angiogenesis. eNOS is phosphorylated in response to various forms of cellular stimulation, but the role of phosphorylation in the regulation of nitric oxide (NO) production and the kinase(s) responsible are not known. Here we show that the serine/threonine protein kinase Akt (protein kinase B) can directly phosphorylate eNOS on serine 1179 and activate the enzyme, leading to NO production, whereas mutant eNOS (S1179A) is resistant to phosphorylation and activation by Akt. Moreover, using adenovirus-mediated gene transfer, activated Akt increases basal NO release from endothelial cells, and activation-deficient Akt attenuates NO production stimulated by vascular endothelial growth factor. Thus, eNOS is a newly described Akt substrate linking signal transduction by Akt to the release of the gaseous second messenger NO.  相似文献
