Summary Intracerebral infusion of (+) bicuculline methiodide, but not of its (–) isomer, in the preoptic area, stimulated masculine sexual behavior in rat as evidenced by a decrease in the number of intromissions preceding ejaculation and a shortening of the ejaculation latency and postejaculatory interval. Molecular and cellular mechanisms of T Cell development

The thymus is central to the establishment of a functioning immune system. Here is the place where T cells mature from hematopoietic progenitors, driven by mutual interactions of stromal cells and the developing thymocytes. As a result, different types of T cells are generated, all of which have been carefully selected for the ability to act in host defense towards non-self and against the potential to mount pathogenic self-reactive autoimmune responses. In this review we summarize our present knowlege on the lineage decisions taking place during this development, the selection processes responsible for shaping the T cell antigen-receptor repertoire, the interactions with the stromal components and the signal transduction pathways which transform the interactions with the thymic microenvironment into cellular responses of survival, proliferation, differentiation and, importantly, also of cell death. The effect of hunger on free fatty acid and corticosterone plasma levels in rats.

The time function of free fatty acids and of corticosterone in plasma in fed and fasted rats was investigated. Also a study of the influence of hypoxia on the concentration of plasma free fatty acids was carried out. Whereas fasting does not seem to stimulate lipolysis markedly before 12 h, 2 h of hypoxia elevate the free fatty acid level to its maximum. In the fasted condition, all values are significantly higher than corticosterone in the fed animal.     

Optically healable supramolecular polymers

Polymers with the ability to repair themselves after sustaining damage could extend the lifetimes of materials used in many applications. Most approaches to healable materials require heating the damaged area. Here we present metallosupramolecular polymers that can be mended through exposure to light. They consist of telechelic, rubbery, low-molecular-mass polymers with ligand end groups that are non-covalently linked through metal-ion binding. On exposure to ultraviolet light, the metal-ligand motifs are electronically excited and the absorbed energy is converted into heat. This causes temporary disengagement of the metal-ligand motifs and a concomitant reversible decrease in the polymers' molecular mass and viscosity, thereby allowing quick and efficient defect healing. Light can be applied locally to a damage site, so objects can in principle be healed under load. We anticipate that this approach to healable materials, based on supramolecular polymers and a light-heat conversion step, can be applied to a wide range of supramolecular materials that use different chemistries.

A large nucleolar U3 ribonucleoprotein required for 18S ribosomal RNA biogenesis

Although the U3 small nucleolar RNA (snoRNA), a member of the box C/D class of snoRNAs, was identified with the spliceosomal small nuclear RNAs (snRNAs) over 30 years ago, its function and its associated protein components have remained more elusive. The U3 snoRNA is ubiquitous in eukaryotes and is required for nucleolar processing of pre-18S ribosomal RNA in all organisms where it has been tested. Biochemical and genetic analyses suggest that U3 pre-rRNA base-pairing interactions mediate endonucleolytic pre-rRNA cleavages. Here we have purified a large ribonucleoprotein (RNP) complex from Saccharomyces cerevisiae that contains the U3 snoRNA and 28 proteins. Seventeen new proteins (Utp1 17) and Rrp5 were present, as were ten known components. The Utp proteins are nucleolar and specifically associated with the U3 snoRNA. Depletion of the Utp proteins impedes production of the 18S rRNA, indicating that they are part of the active pre-rRNA processing complex. On the basis of its large size (80S; calculated relative molecular mass of at least 2,200,000) and function, this complex may correspond to the terminal knobs present at the 5' ends of nascent pre-rRNAs. We have termed this large RNP the small subunit (SSU) processome.
