The development of colloidal quantum dots has led to practical applications of quantum confinement, such as in solution-processed solar cells, lasers and as biological labels. Further scientific and technological advances should be achievable if these colloidal quantum systems could be electronically coupled in a general way. For example, this was the case when it became possible to couple solid-state embedded quantum dots into quantum dot molecules. Similarly, the preparation of nanowires with linear alternating compositions--another form of coupled quantum dots--has led to the rapid development of single-nanowire light-emitting diodes and single-electron transistors. Current strategies to connect colloidal quantum dots use organic coupling agents, which suffer from limited control over coupling parameters and over the geometry and complexity of assemblies. Here we demonstrate a general approach for fabricating inorganically coupled colloidal quantum dots and rods, connected epitaxially at branched and linear junctions within single nanocrystals. We achieve control over branching and composition throughout the growth of nanocrystal heterostructures to independently tune the properties of each component and the nature of their interactions. Distinct dots and rods are coupled through potential barriers of tuneable height and width, and arranged in three-dimensional space at well-defined angles and distances. Such control allows investigation of potential applications ranging from quantum information processing to artificial photosynthesis.  相似文献

Trefoil protein 1 (TFF1) is a small secreted protein belonging to the trefoil factor family of proteins, that are present mainly in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and play pivotal roles as motogenic factors in epithelial restitution, cell motility, and other incompletely characterized biological processes. We previously reported the up-regulation of TFF1 gene in copper deficient rats and the unexpected property of the peptide to selectively bind copper. Following the previous evidence, here we report the characterization of the copper binding site by fluorescence quenching spectroscopy and mass spectrometric analyses. We demonstrate that Cys58 and at least three Glu surrounding residues surrounding it, are essential to efficiently bind copper. Moreover, copper binding promotes the TFF1 homodimerization, thus increasing its motogenic activity in in vitro wound healing assays. Copper levels could then modulate the TFF1 functions in the GI tract, as well as its postulated role in cancer progression and invasion.  相似文献

Treatment of Ca2+-loaded mitochondria with both aluminum and tyramine results in a swelling of higher amplitude than with aluminum alone, while tyramine alone is ineffective. The phenomenon is accompanied by H2O2 production and thiol and pyridine nucleotide oxidation. Cyclosporin A, N-ethylmaleimide or dithioerythritol completely prevent these effects, while catalase exhibits a lower inhibition, pointing to the induction of the permeability transition (MPT) by an oxidative stress. Reactive oxygen species are generated by the interaction of aluminum with the inner membrane and the oxidation of tyramine by monoamine oxidase on the outer membrane. This different localization determines the oxidation of critical thiol groups located on both internal and external sides of pore-forming structures, resulting in MPT induction. The reduced effect by aluminum or the inefficacy by tyramine, when implied alone, can be attributable to the oxidation of thiol groups located only on the internal or external side, respectively. Ultrastructural observations show that aluminum plus tyramine induce the typical configuration of mitochondria that have undergone the MPT. Instead, with aluminum alone, the sensitive subpopulation, although swollen, preserves the outer membrane and shows an apparently orthodox configuration.  相似文献
