Biotechnology is a rapidly expanding field of science that has led to the formation of a large number of companies that together form a significant sector within the Australian economy. Even though there has been considerable growth in the Australian biotechnology sector as a whole, a large percentage of Australian biotechnology firms are small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) that suffer from a lack of funding and expertise. The development and management of effective strategic alliances are critical to the success and development of biotechnology firms as they provide opportunities to share resources and expertise, access funding and develop new ideas. However, developing and managing strategic alliances is fraught with difficulties which are compounded by size and resource asymmetries and the nature of the biotechnology market. In this paper, we identify the difficulties faced by biotechnology firms and examine the importance of knowledge management related to alliance formation and development with special reference to the Australian context. We examine the knowledge and expertise that are required to be effective in developing strategic alliances in the biotechnology sector and provide a framework for managing knowledge related to strategic alliances. We suggest that critical systems approaches, in particular creative holism, are needed to manage the various forms of knowledge associated with strategic alliances. Information systems (IS) training and career opportunities frequently emphasize the need for a range of skills. This paper examines the role of politics in the promotion of IS professionals. Most studies take a management perspective when looking at the skills required of employees. In this study, the views of the employees are considered. A systems view is taken which allows a holistic interpretation of the complex organizational reality and which acknowledges emergent properties. The case study of an IS department is examined through multiple interpretations using a dialectical hermeneutics approach. The main difference from previous studies is the emphasis in career progression given to the role of politics by IS practitioners. Politics in careers manifests itself in both legitimate and undesirable ways. These include negotiation and persuasion, manoeuvring for a better position, systems of favours and developing strategic friendships. A systems perspective is useful in helping the employee understand the nature of the situation he/she is faced with and in making a decision on the right course of action to take. Politics is usually seen as a very informal aspect of organizational life. Hence, its management, particularly of the less desirable aspects, is difficult and rarely done well. Managers need to be aware of what is happening in their organization and manage the potentially undesirable aspects of political activity. They can do this by reducing uncertainty attached to organizational procedures, rules of conduct and ethical behaviour in the workplace. Change or innovation diffusion is a key issue for most business organizations but is yet difficult to implement as the change management process is often complex as it relies on an organized methodology to complement an organization’s commitment and participation. An ambiguous environment surrounding change mechanism tends to develop unintended attitudes, resulting in resistance and conflict. The study proposes a model for the management of such conflicts among change participants (involved and affected) in the context of organizational change. The authors consider organizational change process as an innovation project that treats change and conflicts holistically with the Ulrich’s notion of boundary considerations (boundary critique). A social network setting of multiple stakeholders is considered to effectively help in resolving problematic situations that hinder organizational learning and change. The proposed model provides a theoretical foundation based on concepts governing Critical Systems Heuristics (CSH), change theory, stakeholder theory and conflict management.  相似文献

The critical success factors that contribute to the successful implementation of electronic health (e‐health) records are still not clear from the literature. Although many studies have been conducted on the successful adoption of technology, they rarely consider the context of adoption. Given that the health sector in most countries provides a complex environment for the implementation of technology, the context becomes highly significant. The authors use case studies from Slovenia and Australia to identify the factors impacting on successful e‐health implementation. Although Slovenia has progressed much further down the road of e‐health than Australia, the contextual factors were important in both cases.
