The complete larval development of Novorostrum decorocrus Osawa, , is described and illustrated on the basis of laboratory‐reared material. Two zoeal stages and one megalop stage were recorded. Zoeas of N. decorocrus closely resemble those of N. indicum in the appendage characters, including the endopod of the maxillule with only a single stout seta on the distal margin. This character is unique to Novorostrum zoeas. However, N. decorocrus is distinguished from N. indicum by the setation on the endopod of the maxilla and the basis of the second maxilliped in both zoeal stages. The megalops of N. decorocrus are characterized by having a strongly elongate carapace, and differs considerably from the adults in the structure of the carapace, rostrum and third thoracic sternite, and in the armature of the pereiopods. The larval duration of N. decorocrus suggests that this rare porcellanid is more widely distributed than currently known.  相似文献

This study summarizes the data relevant to understanding the appearance of the amniotic egg and provides new analyses to determine the inferences that can be drawn from these data. A survey of the recent literature shows that a consensus exists on the probably primitive absence of extended embryo retention in caecilians, despite recent suggestions to the contrary. The two most recent studies on the evolution of embryo retention in sarcopterygians both suggest that early amniotes lacked extended embryo retention. New analyses of length distribution of random trees suggest that the data on embryo retention do not include a phylogenetic signal, and this implies that character optimization of these data does not yield reliable information on the primitive condition for amniotes. Thus, the study of ancestral features of amniotes will probably have to exploit data from the fossil record.  相似文献

Adults of a new spionid polychaete, Rhynchospio nhatrangi, inhabit sandy tubes on muddy sand intertidal flats in an estuary of Nha Trang Bay, southern Vietnam. The worms are up to 8 mm long and 0.5 mm wide for 55 chaetigers. They are unique among spionids in the changes in the arrangement of hooks during ontogenesis: first development of tridentate hooks in neuropodia from chaetiger 10, later loss of hooks in chaetiger 10, and replacement of tridentate hooks by heavy unidentate hooks in neuropodia of chaetigers 11–14. Adults are simultaneous hermaphrodites having sperm in chaetigers 11–14 and oocytes from chaetiger 15 to 23–33. Spermatozoa are introsperm, about 300 µm long. Oocytes are about 120 µm in diameter, with a thin and smooth envelope. Fertilization and early larval development occur in a hatchery formed by elongated dorsal capillaries on the posterior chaetigers. Larvae escape from the hatchery probably when they have developed four chaetigers and then continue development in seawater, feeding on the plankton. When larvae have grown to 14–15 chaetigers, they likely undergo gradual metamorphosis and settle on the bottom. Metameric nuchal organs, glandular pouches in neuropodia, metanephridial segmental organs, hermaphroditism, sperm, and early larval morphology are described here for the first time for Rhynchospio species. An identification key is provided to eight currently recognized Rhynchospio species.  相似文献

Specimens of Chinavia musiva were collected in Parque Estadual do Espinilho (Barra do Quaraí County, RS, Brazil). Insects were reared under controlled conditions (24±1°C; RH 70±10%; 12h L:12h D), and fed on green beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). Eggs of C. musiva differ from the pattern observed in other species of the genus due to chorion colour and surface, and aero‐micropylar processes, number and shape. Exclusive features of the species in the nymphal stage are head and thorax dull; variegated pattern of abdomen, and openings of the scent glands in conspicuous tubercles. Developmental time was, on average, 52 days; females laid more frequently egg masses with 14 or 42 eggs. Females collected from the field as nymphs exhibited higher reproductive performance than females reared on green beans as nymphs and adults, suggesting that wild hosts could be essential for the species life cycle.  相似文献

The embryonic development of the squid Loligo vulgaris was observed from 183 egg masses collected from special devices deployed throughout Cabrera National Park (Baleares Islands, western Mediterranean Sea). Sequence alignment analysis of the cytochrome oxidase I gene revealed that all embryos belonged to L. vulgaris. In total, 549 egg capsules were examined. Viable egg capsules (n = 420) were classified into one of five maturation stages according to the primary external features. The length of the viable egg capsules varied between 40 and 170 mm, and increased with embryonic development. The non-viable capsules (n = 129) were categorized into four groups: I (Ginger root), non-viable II and III, and empty egg capsule (IV). The percentage of non-viable capsules (i.e. grades I, II and III) was 92.25%. Empty capsules accounted for 7.75% of the total non-viable egg capsules. Embryonic development was classified into a second scale of eight stages. Egg capsule stage and embryonic stage were significantly related (n = 420; p < 0.001), facilitating the determination of the embryo developmental phase based on the outward appearance of the egg capsules. The embryo development stage based on the external features of the egg capsules might constitute an innovative tool for in situ embryological data collection. This new method is neither time consuming nor invasive, and could be helpful in fishing cruises, for scuba diving visual census in natural habitats and for laboratory culture. Slight variability in the developmental embryonic stages within egg capsules from the same egg mass was identified. The origin of this asynchrony is discussed. Chronological appearance of organs was similar to that of the six loliginid species previously examined. However, some developmental changes in the timing or rate of events (heterochronies) were observed: Hoyle’s organ was formed earlier in L. vulgaris and the appearance of ventral chromatophores was slightly delayed (2 days) compared with the other species considered.  相似文献

Two thousand eight hundred and sixty Sphaeroceridae representing 45 species were caught in eight traps, baited with horse, cow or hamster dung or carrion, placed in woodland and in the open at Silwood Park, Berkshire, during 1983/4. A list of the species and the numbers of each caught in each of the traps is given. Comparisons between the catches of open and woodland habitats and between the catches of the different baits used are made. The habitat and bait preferences and the phenologies of the dominant species are discussed.  相似文献

The larval development of Caligus epidemicus comprises ten stages: two nauplii, one copepodid, six chalimus, and one preadult (young adult) stages. The morphology of each of these ten instars is described based on material reared from eggs in the laboratory. Addition of fifth and sixth chalimus stages in the ontogeny of C. epidemicus is discussed in the light of the developmental changes in the leg armature. Some peculiarities about the structure of the frontal filament in various chalimus stages are also discussed.  相似文献
