Robust stabilization of the system family

The problem of robust stabilization of a system family is studied here. A sufficient condition for the existence of a robust controller is presented under the assumption that there are perturbations both in the numerator and in the denominator of the nominal system. This condition can be given by an inequality that is satisfied by the coefficient vectors of the perturbed polynomials. Based on this, the robust controller family stabilizing the system family can be obtained. Therefore, the condition has the advantages of easy computing and further satisfying other required properties.

Multiple Hypothesis Testing of Market Risk Forecasting Models

Extending previous risk model backtesting literature, we construct multiple hypothesis testing (MHT) with the stationary bootstrap. We conduct multiple tests which control for the generalized confidence level and employ the bootstrap MHT to design multiple comparison testing. We consider absolute and relative predictive ability to test a range of competing risk models, focusing on value‐at‐risk and expected shortfall (ExS). In devising the test for the absolute predictive ability, we take the route of recent literature and construct balanced simultaneous confidence sets that control for the generalized family‐wise error rate, which is the joint probability of rejecting true hypotheses. We implement a step‐down method which increases the power of the MHT in isolating false discoveries. In testing for the ExS model predictive ability, we design a new simple test to draw inference about recursive model forecasting capability. In the second suite of statistical testing, we develop a novel device for measuring the relative predictive ability in the bootstrap MHT framework. The device, which we coin multiple comparison mapping, provides a statistically robust instrument designed to answer the question: ‘Which model is the best model?’ Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

BH3-only proteins in tumorigenesis and malignant melanoma

BH3-only proteins are a subset of the Bcl-2 family of apoptotic regulators. BH3-only proteins function as ‘damage sensors’ in the cell; they are activated in response to cellular stress or DNA damage, whereupon they initiate apoptosis. Apoptosis is the primary mechanism by which the body rids itself of genetically defective cells and is critical for preventing the accumulation of cells with tumorigenic potential. Therefore, dysregulation of BH3-only proteins may promote tumorigenesis. Furthermore, functional apoptosis pathways are required for the success of most cancer treatments, including chemotherapy. Resistance to chemotherapy, as seen with malignant melanoma, often reflects an inability of tumor cells to undergo apoptosis. By deciphering the roles of BH3-only proteins in tumorigenesis, we may learn how to manipulate cell death pathways to overcome apoptotic resistance. This review summarizes the current knowledge of BH3-only proteins and how they contribute to tumorigenesis, with particular attention given to studies involving melanoma.
