Comparative analysis of phospholamban phosphorylation in crude membranes of vertebrate hearts

Summary Phospholamban, a sarcoplasmic reticulum phosphoprotein, is present in the hearts of mammalian, avian, amphibian, and fish species. Phylogenetic changes are indicated by marked differences among species in cardiac phospholamban content and by the absence of Ca²⁺/calmodulin-dependent phospholamban phosphorylation at an early developmental stage.

Summary A freely grafted rat soleus muscle exhibits a decrease in velocity and capacity of SR calcium uptake. This deficit is not prevented by maintaining neural connections (nerve-intact graft) during grafting. Thus the greater mechanical capability of nerve-intact grafts, relative to standard grafts, is not accompanied by any enhancement of the SR tubules.     

Diltiazem prevents the damage to cultured aortic smooth muscle cells induced by hyperlipidemic serum

Summary Diltiazem, a calcium antagonist, significantly reduced the increased⁴⁵Ca uptake and the number of dead cells in cultured aortic smooth muscle cells induced by hyperlipidemic serum.     

Colchicine-induced appearance (proliferation) of smooth sarcoplasmic reticulum in arterial smooth muscle cells

Summary Colchicine treatment resulted in the appearance and proliferation of smooth sarcoplasmic reticulum in some smooth muscle cells of the aortic and pulmonary trunk walls in the rabbit. The significance of cytoplasmic microtubules and/or membrane-bound tubulin for the morphogenesis, functioning and control of smooth endoplasmic reticulum in different kinds of cells is discussed.     

The role of muscle in determining growth and size in teleost fish

Summary Rapid growth to large size in fish results from a sustained recruitment of new fibres into their axial series of myomeres. Cessation of recruitment at a small fish size leads to slow growth and a small final size of the fish. Fibre growth dynamics of fishes evidently govern growth and size through fibres' surface area to length ratios, which control their nutrient assimilation rates.

白介素-10对TNF-α介导血管平滑肌细胞增殖的影响

观察重组人白介素 10 (rhIL_10 )对肿瘤坏死因子 (TNF_α)刺激的离体大鼠胸主动脉血管平滑肌细胞增殖的影响。体外培养SD大鼠胸主动脉血管平滑肌细胞 ,采用MTS PES法确定血管平滑肌细胞的增殖状态。结果显示 ,TNF_α对血管平滑肌细胞增殖具有明显的刺激作用。rhIL_10单独应用对血管平滑肌细胞生长没有影响。在TNF_α刺激下 ,低至 10ng mL的rhIL_10可明显抑制血管平滑肌细胞的生长 (P <0 0 5 )。     

Metabolic biochemistry and the making of a mesopelagic mammal

Large seals such as northern and southern elephant seals and Weddell seals are able to dive for startling duration and enormous depth. The current dive duration record is 120 minutes (recorded for the southern elephant seal); the current depth record is 1.5 km (recorded for the northern elephant seal). Equally striking is the widespread observation that these seals when at sea spend close to 90% of the time submerged and often at great depth. For practical purposes, these species can be viewed as true mesopelagic animals when they are at sea. A review of current knowledge indicates that low power output but high efficiency metabolic functions of skeletal muscles coupled with inherently low (and potentially further suppressible) metabolic rates constitute strategic biochemical components in the making of a mesopelagic mammal.
