Forecasting Hourly Peak Call Volume for a Rural Electric Cooperative Call Center

This research forecasts peak call volume of a centralized after‐hours call center for rural electric cooperatives to help the call center determine staffing levels. A Gaussian copula is used to capture the dependence among non‐normal distributions. Using a centralized call center reduces costs by approximately 75% compared to having individual call centers at each cooperative. Adding cooperatives to the centralized call center is projected to further decrease costs per member. An out‐of‐sample forecasting exercise after the call center expanded validated the model's forecast that additional cooperatives could be added without a proportional increase in the peak number of calls. V-BLAST-based demodulate-and-forward two-way relaying： protocol design and the detection

We propose a novel vertical Bell Laboratories layered space-time (V-BLAST) based two-way relaying protocol that comprises two user terminals and one multi-antenna demodulate-and-forward (DMF) relay station. We consider the situation when these two user terminals employ different modulation types and investigate its detection techniques. The key feature of the detection techniques is that we quantify decision reliability at the relay station by introducing a so-called normalized correlation coefficient (CORR), rather than having full confidence in demodulation at the relay station. With the assistance of the normalized correlation coefficient, we develop detection methods at both the relay station and user terminals. In particular, we propose a CORR-based ordering algorithm at the relay station which can be applied to detection for general V-BLAST architectures. Simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the CORR-based ordering algorithm over the conventional signal-to-noise based ordering algorithm. Finally, we demonstrate overall error-performance of the V-BLAST-based DMF two-way relaying protocol via simulations.

SER analysis and power allocation for hybrid cooperative transmission system

The symbol-error-rate(SER) and power allocation for hybrid cooperative(HC) transmission system are investigated.Closed-form SER expression is derived by using the moment generating function(MGF)-based approach.However,the resultant SER contains an MGF of the harmonic mean of two independent random variables(RVs),which is not tractable in SER analysis.We present a simple MGF expression of the harmonic mean of two independent RVs which avoids the hypergeometric functions used commonly in previous studies.Using the simple MGF,closed-form SER for HC system with M-ary phase shift keying(M-PSK) signals is provided.Further,an approximation as well as an upper bound of the SER is presented.It is shown that the SER approximation is asymptotically tight.Based on the tight SER approximation,the power allocation of the HC system is investigated.It is shown that the optimal power allocation does not depend on the fading parameters of the source-destination(SD) channel and it only depends on the source-relay(SR) and relay-destination(RD) channels.Moreover,the performance gain of the power allocation depends on the ratio of the channel quality between RD and SR.With the increase of this ratio,more performance gain can be acquired.
