Presence of serum proteins in submaxillary duct perfusate

Summary The secretory activity of the main excretory duct of rat submaxillary gland was investigated by the technique of luminal perfusion. Immunologic studies of the perfusate revealed the presence of serum antigens and the absence of intrinsic submaxillary gland antigens. It is suggested that the submaxillary duct permits passive transport of serum proteins to saliva from serum.     

Mammalian pineal melatonin: A clock for all seasons

Summary The central role of the pineal gland and its hormone melatonin (MEL) in mammalian photoperiodic responses is discussed in terms of: 1) evidence for the involvement of MEL in photoperiodism, 2) which feature of the MEL secretion profile might be most important for regulating photoperiodic responses, 3) evidence for the modulation of responses to changes in daylength based on previous photoperiod exposure (i.e., photoperiodic history) and 4) how the MEL signal might be processed at its target sites to elicit physiological responses.

Brain factor fromGalleria mellonella (Lepidoptera) stimulating silk gland activity

Brain extracts from day 1–4 last instar larvae ofGalleria mellonella (Lepidoptera) stimulate RNA synthesis in cultured silk glands from day 3 last instar larvae. When the fibroin-synthesizing posterior parts of silk glands were incubated for 3 h in vitro in the presence of brain extract (0.1 brain equivalent), [³H]-uridine incorporation into RNA was stimulated more than twofold. The stimulating effect of brain extract showed a dose response relationship. It is suggested that the heat-resistant and protease-sensitive brain factor is a peptide.     

The effect of castration,testosterone and estradiol on14C-serotonin metabolism by organ cultures of male rat pineal glands

Summary The pineal gland of the male rat does not appear to rely on prior conversion of testosterone to estradiol for the stimulant effect of testosterone on pineal melatonin and 5-methoxytryptophol synthesis.     

The effect of a phorbol ester upon the cholinergic regulation of potassium permeability in the rat submandibular gland

Acetylcholine releases calcium from cytoplasmic stores and permits an influx of calcium in salivary acinar cells. The resultant rise in [Ca²⁺]_i causes an increase in potassium permeability which is an important part of the secretory response. We have investigated the effects of 12-0-tetradecanoyl phorbol-13-acetate, a potent activator of protein kinase C, upon this regulation of potassium permeability in superfused pieces of rat submandibular salivary gland. This compound inhibited the initial [Ca²⁺]_o-independent component of the response of acetylcholine but had no effect upon the subsequent [Ca²⁺]_o-dependent phase. This compound does not, therefore, appear to inhibit receptor-regulated calcium influx.

丽斑麻蜥（Eremias argus）消化系统组织结构研究

丽斑麻蜥是爬行纲、蜥蜴目蜥蜴科,麻蜥属动物,多见于我国北方。有关丽斑麻蜥消化系统的研究在国内还没有报道,本文用常规的石蜡切片方法对丽斑麻蜥的消化系统进行光镜观察。在此基础上进一步与蛙类消化系统进行了比较,旨在探讨消化系统结构与功能的关系,从而为比较解剖学和生理生态学的研究奠定基础。
