Human Culture and Science: Equality and Inequality as Foundations of Scientific Thought

We argue that the concepts of `human equality' and `inequality' play an important role in the structure of science and philosophy. When the value of `human inequality' predominates, scientific categories are formed in accordance with the principle of `hierarchical differentiation' and concepts remain closely tied to the objects they are referring to. Following Mirowski we define this as the `anthropometric stage' of human thought and development. Contrary, Mirowski's `syndetic stage' refers to societies where the value of `human equality' prevails. Here concepts appear that are universally applicable. However, because of their conventional nature these concepts cannot be `grasped' any longer by human intuition. Between the `anthropometric' and `syndetic' stages, a `lineamentric stage' appears, a period of transition from `human equality' to `human inequality'. Being both a bridge and gap between the two other stages, the `lineamentric' stage contains many contradictions between an `abstract attitude' and `concrete categories'. In this paper we examine the anthropometric, lineamentric and syndetic stages and discuss several examples taken from philosophy, logic, mathematics and physics.

略论宋代皇城司秘密警察

Loess buried paleosols geosols welded paleosols pedocomplexes towards a global quaternary pedostratigraphy and paleoclimatic history

Micromorphological studies show that a comparision of the loess-paleosol sequence of the Karamaydan section, Central Asia, with the upper part of the Luochuan section, China, clearly indicates that for the Brunhes chron the sequence at Karamaydan is even more detailed than the corresponding section at Luochuan. Single paleosols at Luochuan correspond to pedocomplexes at Karamaydan; some pedocomplexes at Luochuan are represented by more detailed successions at Karamaydan (fig. 1). The loess-paleosol sequence at Karamaydan should therefore be regarded as a key sequence for reconstructing the climatic history of the Brunhes epoch. Correlation with the deep-sea oxygen isotope record of Bassinot et al. (1994), which includes an accurate astronomical time scale, allows a detailed chronostratigraphical subdivision of the loess-paleosol sequence in Karamaydan for the Brunhes chron. Mineralogical and clay mineralogical investigations show that there is little difference in the type and amount of pedogenic clay mineral formation between two Holocene soils and the paleosols in the Brunhes chron at Karamaydan. These results indicate that the climates of the interglacials represented by the B or Bt horizons of the buried paleosols were similar to that of the Holocene. In view of these results the Paleopedology Commission should develop a uniform terminology of mono- and polygenetic paleosols and pedostratigraphic units which can be used globally.     

谶纬与汉代神仙术的演变简

现存纬书文献中保存了不少神仙资料，这些资料生动地展现了当时神仙思想发展演变情形。纬书文献表明，西汉后期求仙人、仙药的成仙术逐渐为服食术所取代，服食对象极广，并且形成一定体系。方士杜撰司过之神，将善恶报应说改造为积善长生说；受到谶纬符应思想影响，符一变为天命符应，再变为道法、道术的象征。因此，谶纬神仙术可视为早期方仙术向道教神仙术演进的过渡桥梁，并对道教神仙术体系的形成产生很大的影响。
