Maturation of the pineal melatonin rhythm in long- and short-day reared Djungarian hamsters

Summary Male Djungarian hamsters, reared under long (16L/8D) or short (10L/14D) days, were sacrificed at various ages during the day or night, or at night following a 30-min light pulse. The pineal melatonin rhythm matured similarly under long and short days by 20 days of age. The results are discussed in context of the hypothesis that melatonin mediates the photoperiod effects which forestall puberty in short-day reared hamsters.Supported by NIH research grant HD-05481.     

A daily rhythm in hCG binding to ovarian follicles of the cyclic hamster

Summary On each day of the estrous cycle hCG binding to follicle increased from 09.00 to 21.00 h; then hCG binding was static until 09.00 h of the next day. FSH binding did not exhibit rhythmicity. This pattern of hCG binding may be related to the pulsing of LH on each cycle day.Acknowledgments. Effects of the light-dark cycle and scheduled feeding on behavioral and reproductive rhythms of the cyprinodont fish,Medaka,Oryzias latipes

Summary Medaka were maintained on a 168 light-dark cycle and fed once daily on one of 5 different feeding schedules. The daily rhythm of agonistic behavior rapidly entrained to the scheduled feeding time and maintained this entrainment during a 3-day starvation period. In contrast the daily rhythms of egg laying and courtship stayed entrained to the L:D cycle regardless of the feeding schedule. Thus, temporal integration of this fish with its daily environment can involve multistimuli which concurrently and differentially entrain externally expressed circadian systems.We thank Mark Goodrich and Steve Huber for fish maintenance and technical assistance; and Don Dovala for aid in developing the automatic feeder. Interdependence between locomotor activity and duration of wakefulness in humans during isolation

Summary Locomotor activity was recorded in 14 subjects who lived singly in an isolation unit for 16 to 88 days. Their free-running circadian rhythms had a mean period of 25.9 h, with individual means in the duration of wakefulness () ranging from 12.1 to 22.9 h. Intraindividually, the hourly means of activity were negatively correlated with to such a degree that the total amount of activity per day remained constant irrespective of large variations in .
