Philosophy,history and sociology of science: Interdisciplinary relations and complex social identities

Sociology and philosophy of science have an uneasy relationship, while the marriage of history and philosophy of science has—on the surface at least—been more successful. I will take a sociological look at the history of the relationships between philosophy and history as well as philosophy and sociology of science. Interdisciplinary relations between these disciplines will be analysed through social identity complexity theory in order to draw out some conclusions on how the disciplines interact and how they might develop. I will use the relationships between the disciplines as a pointer for a more general social theory of interdisciplinarity which will then be used to sound a caution on how interdisciplinary relations between the three disciplines might be managed.

Copernicus and Fracastoro: the dedicatory letters to Pope Paul III, the history of astronomy, and the quest for patronage

Copernicus’s De revolutionibus (1543) and Girolamo Fracastoro’s Homocentrica (1538) were both addressed to Pope Paul III (1534-1549). Their dedicatory letters represent a rhetorical exercise in advocating an astronomical reform and an attempt to obtain the papal favour. Following on from studies carried out by Westman (1990) and Barker & Goldstein (2003), this paper deals with cultural, intellectual and scientific motives of both texts, and aims at underlining possible relations between them, such as that Copernicus knew of Fracastoro’s Homocentrica, and that at least part of the rhetorical strategy laid out in De revolutionibus’s dedicatory letter can be read as a sophisticated response to Fracastoro’s arguments.

比较方法的运用与滥用:学科史述评

在讨论比较方法在人类学中的历史及其多种用法的基础上 ,分析了比较方法与文化相对论 ,特别是比较方法与萨皮尔 -沃尔夫假说Sapir-Whorfhypothesis代表的那种“激进的”或“认知的epistemologist”相对论的内在矛盾 ;最后 ,运用与阿赞德人巫术和卜筮有关的论争来考察温和相对论与认知相对论的区别。这一事例也解释了学者们近期提出的种种补救方式对于解决此类难题不能奏效的原因。

《泰山志》编纂与泰山研究

1993年版《泰山志》,由于空间太小,布局欠妥,存在缺项,时代性和科学性未能得到充分体现。目前泰山研究的成果已经比较充分地体现了泰山精神文化和物质文化的内涵。新一轮山志编纂若要体现双遗产特色,应从多学科研究成果中选材,并设泰山研究专编;必须摒弃重人文轻自然的观念。

M·克莱因数学教育思想的核心内容是数学史为教学的指南 :数学教材的编写和数学课堂教学都应以史为鉴 ,通过数学的发展史来了解学生的认知发展规律 ,通过数学家的困难来解释和克服学生的学习困难 ,改变学生错误的数学观 ,根据历史发展的顺序来安排教学内容的顺序 ,利用历史背景知识来激发学生的兴趣 ,展示数学的魅力 ,创造学习的动机 .在这种数学教育思想指导下的课堂教学具有浓郁的人文气息 ,数学因此不再索然寡味 ,不再冰冷无情 ,不再一味抽象 ,不再孤芳自赏 ,不再远离现实 ,值得我们借鉴
