Effects of a crystalline proteinase fromBacillus subtilis (Nagarse) on angiotensins I and II

Zusammenfassung Nagarse, eine vomBacillus subtilis gewonnene kristalline Proteinase, bewirkte eine intensive Inaktivation von Angiotensin II, wobei keine Umwand-lung von Angiotensin I in Angiotensin II festzustellen war. Die mögliche Identität zwischen einem aus einer menschlichen Plasmafraktion gewonnenen Polypeptid nach Nagarse-Impfung mit Angiotensin II wird geprüft.     

Ultrastructure of a mucous gland cell found in the tube feet of the starfishAsterina stellifera

Resumen Es describida la ultraestrutura de un segundo tipo de célula glandular mucosa que es encontrada en el pié ambulacrario de la estrella del marAsterina stellifera. Los gránulos secretores de esta célula tienen en su interior una ultraestrutura en forma de pequeños puntos densos y delicadas fibrillas, mas faltando una organizatión, principalmente comparada con la organizatión del otro tipo de granulo mucoso, también encontrado en el mismo pié ambulacrario.     

Genetic analysis of modifier variability inDrosophila subobscura

Summary The previously detected modifier variability acting on the expression of the Bare (Ba) locus inDrosophila subobscura is demonstrated to be due to polygenes situated along the chromosome O. From crosses between isogenic lines of high and low modifier effect we ascertained the presence of approximately 5 modifier loci.We are grateful to Dr M. Electron diffraction and electron microscopy studies on the crystalline component of enamel of theOdontaspis (selachii)

Résumé L'auteur constate que dans la dent du Requin du genreOdontaspis l'ultrastucture de la substance qui recouvre la dentine est morphologiquement très semblable à celle de l'émail de la dent humaine. Par diffraction électronique le composant cristallin de l'émail du Requin a été déterminé comme étant del'apatite. Ces résultats montrent que le revêtement externe de la dent d'Odontaspis peut être considéré comme un véritable émail.     

Piezo proteins are pore-forming subunits of mechanically activated channels

Mechanotransduction has an important role in physiology. Biological processes including sensing touch and sound waves require as-yet-unidentified cation channels that detect pressure. Mouse Piezo1 (MmPiezo1) and MmPiezo2 (also called Fam38a and Fam38b, respectively) induce mechanically activated cationic currents in cells; however, it is unknown whether Piezo proteins are pore-forming ion channels or modulate ion channels. Here we show that Drosophila melanogaster Piezo (DmPiezo, also called CG8486) also induces mechanically activated currents in cells, but through channels with remarkably distinct pore properties including sensitivity to the pore blocker ruthenium red and single channel conductances. MmPiezo1 assembles as a ～1.2-million-dalton homo-oligomer, with no evidence of other proteins in this complex. Purified MmPiezo1 reconstituted into asymmetric lipid bilayers and liposomes forms ruthenium-red-sensitive ion channels. These data demonstrate that Piezo proteins are an evolutionarily conserved ion channel family involved in mechanotransduction.     

An aqueous extract of Liu Wei Di Huang Wan alters the labeling of blood constituents with Technetium-99m

The Liu Wei Di Huang Wan is a formula of a traditional Chinese medicine that is used to treat asthma patients and has been shown to have several important properties,such as antioxidant and free radical scavenging activities.The influence of an extract of Liu Wei Di Huang Wan on the labeling of blood constituents with technetium-99m was investigated.Anticoagulated blood(Wistar rats) was incubated with the extract,stannous chloride and technetium-99m,as sodium pertechnetate.Samples were centrifuged and aliquots of plasma and blood cells were separated and precipitated with trichloroacetic acid,to obtain soluble and insoluble fractions of the blood constituents.The percentage of radioactivity(%ATI) in all the fractions was determined.The analysis of the results shows that the extract at the highest concentration used(70 mg/mL) decreased significantly(P<0.05) the %ATI(from 96.48 ± 1.19 to 54.46 ± 7.38) on blood cells compartment,(from 81.11 ± 4.15 to 61.33 ± 4.74) on insoluble fractions of blood cells and(from 65.91 ± 2.44 to 13.15 ± 3.62) on insoluble fractions of plasma.In conclusion,the results suggest that the substances present on this extract can alter this labeling process,probably due to(i) redox properties(antioxidant and chelator activities) and/or(ii) specific actions in the binding sites where the 99mTc would be bound on the blood constituents.As a consequence,precaution is suggested on the interpretation of the nuclear medicine results from performed with blood constituents labeled with 99m Tc in patients that have undertaken LWDHW,although the current findings were obtained in experimental animal models.     

Social diversity promotes the emergence of cooperation in public goods games

Humans often cooperate in public goods games and situations ranging from family issues to global warming. However, evolutionary game theory predicts that the temptation to forgo the public good mostly wins over collective cooperative action, and this is often also seen in economic experiments. Here we show how social diversity provides an escape from this apparent paradox. Up to now, individuals have been treated as equivalent in all respects, in sharp contrast with real-life situations, where diversity is ubiquitous. We introduce social diversity by means of heterogeneous graphs and show that cooperation is promoted by the diversity associated with the number and size of the public goods game in which each individual participates and with the individual contribution to each such game. When social ties follow a scale-free distribution, cooperation is enhanced whenever all individuals are expected to contribute a fixed amount irrespective of the plethora of public goods games in which they engage. Our results may help to explain the emergence of cooperation in the absence of mechanisms based on individual reputation and punishment. Combining social diversity with reputation and punishment will provide instrumental clues on the self-organization of social communities and their economical implications.
