Phosphate mobilization from striated muscle following parathyroid hormone administration to thyroparathyroidectomized rats

Summary Parathyroid hormone administration to thyroparathyroidectomized rats resulted in a significant reduction in inorganic phosphate content of a variety of striated muscles. Most other organs were unaffected. Much of the extra urinary phosphate present after parathyroid hormone stimulation may be released from the muscles.Supported in part by a grant from the Marquette University Committee on Research.

Summary The absolute configuration of four pharmacologically active tetrahydroisoquinolines has been determined. It was shown that both the levorotatory antipodes of I, II and III and the dextrorotatory enantiomer of IV possessR-configuration at the asymmetric center.

The occurrence of filamentous banded elements as components ofMytilus galloprovincialis byssus

Résumé L'examen au microscope électronique de sections ultra-minces de différentes portions du byssus deMytilus galloprovincialis a révélé pour la première fois la présence de structures filamenteuses périodiques (FBE). Leur période a une longueur de 1000 Å en moyenne, elle est symétrique et comporte deux fractions: A et B. Il est possible que ces structures correspondent à une organisation particulière de la protéine collagène.     

Triple cones found in retinas of 3 fish species

Summary Triple cones were found in the retinas of 3 species of fishes indigenous to the Woods Hole area. Effects of salicylate on water and electrolyte content of human red blood cells

Zusammenfassung Es wird gezeigt, dass Natriumsalicylatin vitro auf menschliche Erythrozyten einendirekten Einfluss ausübt, indem es den Kaliumgehalt vermindert und den Natriumsowie den Wassergehalt vermehrt. Diese Wirkung, die auchin vivo beobachtet werden kann, dürfte die Folge einer Energieverarmung sein, die durch eine Entkopplung der oxydativen Phosphorylierung zustande kommt.     

Enzyme localization in proteins separated by paper electrophoresis in human seminal plasma

Résumé Les transaminases -glutamo-oxaloacétique (GOT) et glutamo-pyruvique (GPT) ont été déterminées dans les protéines du liquide spermatique de l'homme après séparation par électrophorèse sur papier. L'amylase se trouve dans toutes les fractions, mais la GOT et la GPT sont localisées respectivement dans la globuline -2 et l'albumine.     

Dominance relationships of the dark kangaroo mouse ( Microdipodops megacephalus ) and the little pocket mouse ( Perognathus longimembris ) in captivity

Interspecific interactions between the little pocket mouse ( Perognathus longimembris ) and the dark kangaroo mouse ( Microdipodops megacephalus ) were tested in the laboratory. P. longimembris was statistically dominant over M. megacephalus. The dominant - subordinate relationships shown by our laboratory results indicate that interspecific aggression may be one mechanism involved in keeping these sympatric species ecologically separated.
